TREE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1910.
Application filed October 26, 1908. Serial No. 459,548.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX F. BURKART, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tree-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of improvements in tree-holders.
The objects of my invention are to provide a tree-holder particularly intended to hold a Christmas-tree which consists of a plurality of separable parts which can be readily connected by the user, and which can be easily disconnected for packing or storing when such packing or storing is desired, and a further object of said invention is to provide a tree-holder which has great strength and stability requisite for holding trees of considerable weight.
My invention can be constructed of an ornamental design similar to that shown in the accompanying drawing or identical therewith, as hereinafter set forth, so as to make it particularly appropriate for parlors or halls where Christmas-trees are displayed.
The weight of the tree holder as preferably constructed of iron in combination with its base which is comparatively wide, and the low position of its center of gravity, secure the device against the possibility of being easily overturned. The ornamental curves with which it is constructed are intended to act as braces or stays, thereby giving the device additional strength. The small number of parts embraced in the construction as arranged contribute ease of adjustment and of separation of the same.
My invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification and claimed in the a ppended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the base of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one leg or section of said device showing the two connecting rings, one of which is in section.
The numeral 1 is used to designate each leg or section aforesaid. The said section is provided with the screws 3, and the rings 2 have equidistant slots 4. The said rings 2 constitute connecting means whereby the sections are held together, the slots in said rings engaging the stems of said screws, the heads whereof, preventing lateral movement of said sections, form buttons. Spring bars 6 are secured to the sections 1 by screws 5, the said springs bearing against the stem 7 of the tree. Each of said sections including the spring bars 6 is of identical construction, and said device is preferably constructed of three of said sections and a pair of said rings 2.
It can be readily understood that when the sections are assembled the tree stem 7 being forced downward through the connecting rings 2 so as to contact with the spring bars 6, the said bars are forced outward, thereby increasing the pressure on the stem and holding it rigidly in position.
The sections or supports 1 widen gradually from their apices to their bases as shown in Fig. 2, and such widening as well as the curves displayed cause the tree-holder to be oranmental and also substantial. I prefer to use shoulder screws as the parts designated 8 and 5. The spring bars 6 are slidingly movable on screws 5 which is advantageous in accommodating stems of trees of varying diameters, the apertures in springs 6 through which said screws extend having a slightly greater circumference than that of the screws so as to permit the sliding of the said bars on the stems of said screws. To reduce the distance between the spring bars a wedge may be placed between the said bars and the sections 1, between the upper and lower screws 5 as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tree-holder comprising a plurality of counterpart supports, a plurality of centrally-positioned detachable rings connected. to said supports and sustaining the same in an upright position, and spring bars slidably secured to said supports and having inwardly bent ends endwise penetrating said rings.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
