WILLIAM CLARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAPKINHOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,667, dated April 6, 1875; application tiled December 26, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLARK, of the city of New York, N. Y., have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Napkins and analogous purposes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to devices used for tablc purposes, and is designed to provide a convenient and attractive means of holding a napkin, and also an efficient knife-rest.
A ring, of any suitable construction, is snpported upon legs, between which, near their lower extremities, is placed a rest. Ihe napkin having been folded or rolled is inserted in the ring, and occupying a vertical position is prevented from coming in contact with the surface of the table or other object by the rest, which supports it in place. To one or more of the legs a curved bar is attached, which fulfills the offices of a knife-rest.
The simplicity of the invention is such that it will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- A is the ring; B, the legs; C, the rest that supports the napkin in place 5 and D, the kniferest.
It is manifest that the form shown in the drawing may be varied at pleasure, according to the taste of the fabricator. Gare should,
however, be exercised to adapt the several parts to each other, so as to make the device rm upon its legs when in use.
Divers methods of practicing the invention will suggest themselves, and need not be herein specifically set forth; and it may be constructed of sundry materials, such as are employed in the manufacture of analogous articles, and made in a very simple or highly ornate manner, as may be deemed expedient.
I am aware that devices which hold the napkin in a horizontal position have long been known, some of which, under favorable conditions, prevent it from coming in contact with the table. I do not therefore claim, broadly, a napkin-holder which effects this result; but
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the combined napkin-holder and knife-rest composed of the ring A, legs B, rest C, and knife-rest D, substantially as described.
2. In a napkin holder, the combination of the ring A, legs B, and rest C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in devices for holding napkins and analogous purposes, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of December, 1874.
