UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP F. MCCAFIEREY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION CHAIR AND COUCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP F. McCar- FREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combination Chair and Couch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combination chair and couch arranged to permit the user to readily and quickly convert it from a chair to a couch or vice versa.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a frame formed of three sections connected wit-h each other by hinges and of which one is the middle sect-ion, another the foot and seat section and the third the head and back section, the middle section being provided with front and rear legs adapted to rest on the floor, the foot and seat section being provided with legs at its free end, the head and back section being connected with the middle section by adjustable links to hold the said head and back section in a de sired angular position relative to the middle section.
A practical embodiment of'the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combination chair and couch with the parts arranged to form a chair; Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the combination chair and couch with the parts arranged to form a couch; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the main frame with the section in extended position.
The frame of the combination chair and couch consists of a middle section A, a foot and seat section B and a head and back section C. Hinges D connect the adjacent ends of the sections A and B together, and similar hinges D connect the adjacent ends of the sections A and B together. By the arrangement described the section B can be swung into extended position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4: when it is desired to use the piece of furniture as a couch, or the section B may be swung into folded position on top of the middle section A as indicated in Fig. 1 whenever it is desired to use the Specification of Letters Patent.

piece of furniture as a chair. The middle section A is provided with front and rear legs A and A? for supporting the middle section on the floor or other support, and the section A is provided on top with a rabbet A for receiving and supporting a and when the piece of furniture is used as a seat and the sect-ion B is folded upon the sect-ion A as indicated in Fig. 1 then the cushion F is fitted into the rabbet B to provide a cushioned seat. It is understood that the cushion F is removed from the rabbet B prior to folding the section B onto the section A, and after the section B has been folded upon the section A the cushion is placed into the rabbet B When the section B is in folded position upon the section A' then the rabbet B fits onto the projecting top portion of the cushion E of the middle sect-ion A so that the said cushion E need not be removed when changing the piece of furniture from a chair to a couch or vice versa.
A cleat G is attached to the forward end of section A to provide asupport or a rest for the hinged end of the section B at the time the latter is in extended position as shown in Fig. 3.
The head or back section C is recessed for the reception of a cushion H and on the sides of the head and back sect-ion C are piv-' oted at I links I adapted to be hooked onto buttons I and I placed apart on the sides of the middle section A so that the head and back section H can be held in an angular position relative to the middle section A, as shown in Fig. 3, or in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, it being understood that for holding the section 0 in the position shown in Fig. 3 the links I are engaged with the buttons I and for holding the section C in a vertical position the links are engaged with the buttons I A head rest J is adapted to be placed on top of the section C at the time the latter is in vertical position to form a head rest when the piece of furnitureis used as a chair, and
the said head rest J is fastened in place on the section C by straps K fastened to the front of the section 0 and adapted to pass around the head rest- J to fasten on two buttons K on the rear of the section G. The head rest J is used as a filling piece when the piece of furniture is used as a couch (see Fig. 3), and in this case the head rest J is removed from the top of the section (T and is placed on the inner or bottom end thereof, as indicated in Fig. In order to provide suflicient space for the head rest J the bottom end of the section C is provided with cut-out portions C which also accommodate the free end of the foot and seat section B at the time the latter is folded onto the section A. By reference to Fig. 1 it will. be noticed that the legs B of the sec tion B extend into the recessed section G at the time the section B is folded upon the section A, and consequently the said legs do not form an undesirable projection when the piece of furniture is used as a chair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combination chair and couch, comprising a frame having a middle section provided with legs, a foot and seat section hinged to one end of the said middle section and adapted to be folded thereon, the said foot and seat section having rabbets at the top and bottom and being provided at its free end with legs, and a head and back section hinged to the other end of the said middle section, a cushion fitting interchangeably into either top or bottom rabbet of the said foot section, cushions held on the said middle section and the said head and back section, and links adjustably connectsaid middle section.
2. A combination chair and couch, comprising a frame having a middle section provided With legs, a foot and seat section hinged to one end of the said middle section and adapted to be folded thereon, the said foot and seat section having rabbets at the top and bottom and being provided at its free end with legs, and a head and back and back section hinged to the other end of the said middle section, a cushion fitting interchangeably into either top or bottom rabbet of the said foot section, cushions held on the said. middle section and the said head and back section, links adjustably connecting the said head and back section With the said middle section, a head rest and filling piece adapted to rest on the outer end of the said head and back section and adapted to fit onto the inner end of the said head and back section, and fastening means for fastening the said head rest in position on the outer end of the said head and back section.
Signed at Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York this sixth day of February A. D. 1911.
