Description
waited IStairs Y NELSON JOHNSON, OF JASPER., NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 96,009, dated October` 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SWAG-E.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of tha same.
l`o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON J oHNsoN, of Jasper, in the county of Steuben, and in -the State vof New York, have invented certain new and usefulI nprovements in Swages; and do hereby declare ih* t the following is a full, clear, and exact descrf `i thereof', reference vbeing had tothe accompat .1g drawings, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon, malring a part of this specification.'
The nature of my inamon consists in the construction of a swage, io. .sharpening and spreading the point-s of saw-teeth.
Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention.
Figure 2 is section'view of the saine.
` Letter A represent-s the stock of my swage, which consists of a steel bar, and which has a/tapering opening made in its end, which extends backward some distance, where it runs into a slot, made entirely through the side, and extending at right angles withit.
In this tapering hole there is piaced the swage-pin B, which extends to some distance out beyond the end of the stock.
At the back end there is a slot cut through, in which there is placed a tapering wedge, C, which holds the pin securely and firmly in its place..
Pivoted on the top of the stock, fthere is a flat metal plate, D,wh ich acts as a key to hold the wedge in its place, and to prevent its coming out.
In the front end of the stock A there is a number of small openings made, -which slant inward, until they strike the swage-pin B.
These openings are of different sizes, so as to accommodate different-sized teeth, and should forni a perfect jointagainst the side of the pin, so that the teeth can be given a razor-edge'.
Upon the end of the swage-piu B there is placed the adjustable gauge E, which consists of aat metal plate, in which there is cut an elongated slot, so that direct you.
This gauge is adjusted to the proper position, and is then securely fastened there, by the means of the bolt or screw.
As the teeth are placed in these small bevelled openings, the gauge will regulate the angle at which the stock is to he held, and thus each tooth will be upon exactly the same pitch.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable gauge E, upon the end of the swage-pin. for the purpose of regulating the pitch of the teeth, substantially as set forth.
2. The key D, when used to hold the wedge O in its place, substantially as set forth and described.
3. The arrangement of the block A, with a slot in its end and side, pin B, wedge O, and key D, the several parts constructed and operated as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, 'I have hereunto set my hand, this 12th day of May, 1869.
NELSON JOHNSON.
\Vitnesses:
T. A. LEHMANN, JULIAN A. HURDLE.
