My invention has for its object to furnish an improved cant-hook which may be quickly undy conveniently adjusted to the dilercnt-sized logs to be handled, and it consists in the combination of the notched hook, bolt, slide, and plate with en-eh other, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the wooden bar to which the hook is' attnehed, which is mode in the usual form, ain-d the lower part of which is slotted for the reception of lthe hook.' The hook B passes through the slot in the bur A, and through a. slot in the plate En.n,d hhs 'its forwnrd. edge notched, :1s shown in figs. 1 and 2. The plate E'is securely attached to the bnr, and has three staples or slotted flanges attached to or formed upon. it. D is a. forkedslide, the stem of Vwhich passes" through andiworlis in n hole in the flange or staple e. Through the forward end of the branehedorms of theislidc D passes the bolt C, which ts into the notches of the hook B, as shown in iig. 2. The ends of'the bolt C pass through the slotsof the flanges or staples e2 e3, end are kept from working out of place by a, head formed upon one end and a. nut placedupon the other. The slide D is held back, holding the bolt securely against the notchededge of the hook, bythe coiled spring d coiled around the stem of the said side, the rear end of which rests against o pin passing through the said stem, and its other end rests against the rear side offthe staple or flange el.
The principal use of the anges or staples e'l and e3 is to prevent the slide D from being-,forced out from the bar A and bent or broken, should the instrument by accident fell hook downwards. i
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The cont-hook, consisting of `the forked slide I),'bolt C, hook B, and lever A, constructed andopernting in the manner herein described.
, The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20thdhy of August, 1866.
