ARTHUR O. TAYLOR, OF BROOKLYN, 'NEW YORK.
STEREOTYPE-BLQCK.
.To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. TAYLOR,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing at.
Brooklyn, in the county of-Kings and State of New York, have invented-new and usefulImprovements in Stereotype-Blocks, of
which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to stereotype blocks and more particularly to thelocking means for securing the plate to the block to temporarilyretain same while prints are being made from the plate and to quickly release same so that a new plate maybe substituted.
The invention not only embraces the locking means itself but also means by which the :locks'may be immediately adjusted to accommodate plates of various sizes, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this application, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a stereotype block with the improved locks applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the locks. Fig. 3 is a front view of a lock recess. Fig. 4: is a cross section through a lock in its operative position. Fig. 5 is a similar view with the jaw of the lock disengaged. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the aw and its collar.
The invention consists primarily of a look, any number of which may be applied to a block of the desired size, the larger the block there is consequently necessary more locks, and these locks are arranged around the sides of the block in the most advantageous manner but preferably in sets opposite each other, as they will thus exert a gripping effect against each other.
The block is provided around its sides with the desired number of recesses 10 which is covered by a slotted plate 11 having front and rear vertical members 12 and 12 with a blade 13 to enter the rear wall of the recess, and with the assistance of the screws 14 at the front end, retain the plate in its place. The front vertical member 12 is set into the block so that it is flush with the edge of the block.
Along each side of the block is then secured a metallic strip 15 and on the outer face of the latter is secured the second metallic strip 16 which is recessed for the operation of the levers.
Journaled in the plate member 12 and the plate 15 is a shaft 18 one side 19 of which Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1909.
Patented May 24, 1910.
erial No. 498308.
is cut away and the shaft carries at its outer end an arm 20' to rotate samewhile it plays in its recess between the two strips-15*and 16, and on'the upper face of the plate 11 plays a jaw 21 with a stem 22 to enterthe slot in the plate 11 and 'descendinto the recess 10. The stem' 22 has a slot 23 for the passage of the shaft and about this stem and beneath the lower side of the plate 11 is a rectangular collar 24 resting'on the shaft 18 leaving a distance betweenits lower side and the bottom of the slot 23a little less than the diameter of the shaft. The gripping face of the jaw is inclined to fit the beveled edge of the stereotype plate 25: and its under side is serrated to more securely grip the plate 11.
lVlien a stereotype plate is placed on the block the jaws 21, being loose as in Fi-g. 5, are brought against the edge of-theplate and the arm 20 is carriedfrom the vertical position as in Fig. 5 to the horizontal as shown in Fig. 1 causing the flat edge 19to assume a'vertical position and the diameter of the shaft to fill the space between the lower side of the slot and the collar which I around the block and the movement of the cylinder of the press always insures the looking action of the jaw.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A stereotype block provided with a recess, a slotted plate secured to the block opposite said recess, a jaw arranged to operate in the slot of the plate and provided with a pendent stem in'which'an opening is formed, a shaft journaled in opposite walls of the recess and passed through the opening in the stem of the jaw and provided with a cam portion extending sub stantially the entire length thereof, means for turning said shaft, and cooperative means between the shaft, jaw, and plate to cause a binding of the jaw upon the slotted plate to hold the jaw in the adjusted position.
2. A stereotype block provided with a recess, a slotted plate secured to the block opposite the recess, a jaw slidably mounted in said slotted plate and having a pendent stem formed with an opening, a shaft journaled at its ends in opposite walls of the recess and passing through the opening of the stem of the jaw and having a cam portion extending substantially the entire length thereof, cooperative means between the shaft, jaw, and plate to cause a binding of the jaw upon said plate, a lever fitted to the outer end of the shaft, and a strip secured to the block and spaced therefrom to receive said lever after the same has been operated to effect securance of the jaw in the adjusted position.
3. In combination a stereotype block provided with a recess, a slotted plate arranged opposite the recess and provided with pendent members entering said recess and forming walls thereof, a jaw mounted in the slotted plate and having notches in opposite sides to receive the edge portions of the plate bordering upon the slot, and having a pendent stem formed with an opening, a shaft journaled in the pendent portions of the slotted plate and passing through the opening of the stem of the jaw and formed with a cam portion extending approximately the entire length thereof,
means for turning said shaft, and cooperative means between the shaft, jaw, and plate to hold the jaw in the adjusted position.
4. In a stereotype block, the combination with a block having lateral recesses, of slotted plates covering the recesses, jaws adjustable along the upper sides of the plates and serrated on their under sides, slotted stems depending from the jaws, loose collars on the stems and impinging the lower sides of the plate, shafts having a flattened side and playing in the slots of the stems to cause the jaws and the collars to grip the opposite sides of the plates and levers at the ends of the shafts to turn same.
5. In combination a stereotype block having a recess, a slotted plate secured to the block over the recess thereof and having pendent members entering the recess, the inner member having a projecting portion extending into the inner wall of the recess near the bottom thereof, a aw mounted in the slotted plate and having notches in opposite sides to receive the inner edge portions of the slotted plate bordering upon the slot thereof and having a pendent stem formed with an opening, a cam shaft journaled in the pendent portions of the slotted plate and passing through the opening in the stem of the aw, a collar mounted upon the stem of the jaw between the slotted plate and cam shaft, spaced strips secured to an edge of the block, the inner plate havin the outer end of said cam shaft journaled therein, and a lever fitted to the projecting end of the cam shaft and adapted to lie in the space formed between said spaced plates.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
