This invention relates to improvements in rail fastening devices'and has for its object the production of a device of this character The invention will be best understood by' reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in Figure 1 is a top plan view of a rail fastening device showing the same applied to a rail, a portion of the device being broken away to better illustrate the construction, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on line ww of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a rectangular metallic base plate 1 upon which the rail 2 which it is desired to fasten is adapted to be mounted. The'plate 1, in use, is secured to the corresponding supporting tie by means of spikes or pins 3, 4L and 5.
Formed at the upper side of the base plate 1 adjacent one end thereof is a permanent jaw (3 adapted for engagement with one edge portion of the base of the rail. Mounted.
upon the upper side of plate 1 at the opposite end thereof is a movable jaw 7 secured in position by means of the spikes 4 and 5 which pass through elongated slots 8 formed in the rearward portion 8 of the jaw 7, the elongation of said slots permitting, of course, of the desired shifting movement of the jaw. Formed integral with the jaw 7 is a forwardly projecting tenon 9 which slidably engages an elongated slot 10 formed for the reception thereof in 'the plate 1. Said tenon, when the device. is in use, is adapted to engage under the base of the rail,
as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that the rail serves as a means of positively locking the aw 7 against upward movement.
The jaw 7 is locked in operative position by means of a locking member or keeper 11 which is pivotally mounted upon the upper end of a tubular post 12 which is formed integral with the plate 1, projecting upwardly therefrom. The portion 8 of jaw 7 is formed with an elongated slot 12 toafiord clearance for the post 12 as will be readily understood. Thekeeper 11 is held in position upon'the post 12 by means of the pin 5 which engages in the opening in said post, the head of said pin overhanging said post so as to engage against the upper side of member 11 as will be readily understood. The post 12 is of such a height as to project slightly abovethe upper. side of the member 11 so as to hold the head of pin 5 from clampingly engaging with the upper side of keeper 11, the result being that said keeper is held in position upon said post but in such a manner as to permit of free pivotal movement of the same. Said keeper is adapted for engagement with a shoulder 11 which is formed upon the jawportion 8, the arrangement being such that when said keeper is rocked into engagement with said shoulder,
after movement of jaw 7 into operative relation with the rail base, said jaw will be locked into operative position, being prevented from moving outwardly to releasing position. Pivotal movement of keeper 11 in one direction, when said member is in looking position, is prevented by means of a lug 13 formed upon the upper side of the jaw portion 8', movement of said member in the opposite direction being prevented by a spike 14 adapted to be driven into operative position engaging with registering slots 15 formed in the jaw portion 8 and the plate 1. With this arrangement it will be seen that when it is desired to rock the keeper 11 to inoperative position in order to release the rail, it is first required to withdraw the spike 14, whereupon said keeper will be released to permit of the desired movement of the same.
In order to insure against creeping of the rail, the bottoms of the-jaws 6 and 7 are formed with projecting teeth 16' adapted for j Cit so as to take up any wear and insure a snug engagement between the same. XV 1th thls arrangement it is of course apparent that creeping of the rail. that is relative longitudinal movement of the same, will be positively prevented. v
\Vith the construction set forth, in the fastening of a rail therein, the jaw 7 is first slid outwardly to its outer terminal. movement, the base of the rail being then placed upon the plate 1 and one side of the base thereof engaged with the jaw O, the recesses 17 in this side of the rail base (said recesses having been previously formed therein) being engaged with the corresponding teeth ll). The aw member 7 is then slid into en-= gagement with the opposite edge of the rail base, the teeth 16 thereof being engaged with the corresponding recesses 17. The keeper 11 is. then turned to engagement with the shoulders 11 in order to lock said jaw in operative position. \V hen the member 11 is in operative, position the spike l-lis driven to position to securely hold the keeper in operative relation with the shoulders 11. The reverse operation is of course resorted to when it is desired to release the rail from the device.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do notwish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A rail fastening comprising a base plate upon which the rail is adapted to be mounted; a permanent jaw on said plate for engagement with one edge of the base of the rail; a movable jaw cotiperating with said plate for engagementwith the opposite edge of the rail base; an integral projection on said plate; and a keeper pivotally mounted on said projection adapted to be turned into engagement with one edge of said movable jaw to lock the same in operative position, substantially as described.
2. A rail fastening comprising a base plate upon which the rail is adapted to be mounted; a permanent jaw on said plate for engagement with one edge of the base of the rail; a movable jaw cooperating with said plate for engagement with the opposite edge of the rail base; an integral projection on said plate; a keeper pivotally mounted on said projection adapted to be turned into engagement with one' edge of said movable jaw to lock the same in operative position, there being an opening formed through said projection; and a headed member engaging with said opening and adapted for engagement with the outer side of said keeper to hold the latter in position upon said projection, substantially as described.
3, A rail fastening comprising a base plate upon which the rail is adapted to be'mounted; a permanent jaw on said plate for engagement with one edge of the base of the rail; a movable jaw mounted upon the upper side of said plate and transversely adjustable thereon into and out of engagement with the opposite edge of said rail base; an integral upwardly projecting tubular post on said plate, there being an elongated slot in said movable aw affording clearance for said post; a keeper pivotally mounted on said post adapted to be turned into engagement with one edge of said movable jaw to lock the same in operative position; and a headed pin engaging with the opening in said post and having its head overhanging the upper side of said keeper to hold the latter in posit-ion upon said post, substantially as described.
4-. A rail fastening comprising a base plate upon which the rail is adapted to be mounted; a permanent jaw on said plate for en gagement with one edge of the base of the rail; a movable jaw cotiperating with said plate for engagement with the opposite edge of the rail base; a post on said plate; a keeper pivotally mounted on said post adapted to be turned into engagement with said movable jaw to lock the same into operative position; and means overhanging the outer end of said post for holding said keeper in position thereon, said post being slightly higher than the corresponding dimension of said keeper whereby said overhanging means is prevented from clampingly engaging with the adjacent side of the keeper, substantially as described,
