Description

Patented Oct. 3|, I899. F. W. GERLACH.
SPIKE P L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. GERLAOH, OF KENTON, OHIO.
SPIKE-FULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,924, dated October 31, 1899.- Application filed September 6, 1899. Serial No. 729,594. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FRANK W. GERLAOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Pullers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved spike and nail extractor; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device of this character.-
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved nail and spike extractor with a portion of the handle broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
1 denotes the hand-lever, the lower end of which is formed with a curved fulcrum-toe 2 and its inner face with a stationary gripperjaw 3.
4 represents the counterpart movable jaw, fulcrumed on its upper end to the handle 1 by the transverse bolt 5, and 6 denotes a leafspring fixed to the handle 1,with its free end resting against the contiguous face of the movable jaw to separate it from the fixed jaw.
7 denotes a transverse bar having one end pivoted to the movable jaw and its opposite end extending through a guide-slot 8 in the handle, and 9 denotes a cam-lever pivoted on the projecting end of said bar, with its camface resting against the contiguous edge or face of the hand-lever.
In operation the "ripping-jaws are placed over the head of the spike or nail and the jaws closed by means of the cam-lever 9 to firmly grip the spike. The hand-lever is then thrown down, using the toe 2 as a fulcrumpoint to withdraw the spike.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in 'the best form now known to me; but many changes in the shape, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
In combination, the han d-lever formed with a guide-slot, a gripper-jaw and a curved fulcrum-toe, the movable jaw pivoted to said hand-lever, the interposed spring, the transverse bar pivoted to the movable jaw, and extending through the guide-slot, and the cam lever fulcrumed on the projecting end of said bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit HQSSGS.
FRANK W. GERLAOH. Witnesses:
