-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER H. MATrooKs', a citizen of the United States, residing at Stella, in the, county of Oarteret and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nail-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in nail extractors, of the type having a plurality of aws arranged to grip the shank or head of a nail and adapted to withdraw the nail through the operation of a suitable lever.
The main object of the present invention is the production of a nail extractor of the type described, wherein the operating lever is extended to form one of the jaws and freely movable with relation to a fulcrum-bar, to which the other of said jaws is pivotally secured. i
The invention in the preferred details of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved nail extractor, the parts being shown in the initial gripping position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, one of the strips of the fulcrum bar being broken away and the parts being shown in fully operated position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the extractor.
Referring to the drawings my improved nail extractor comprises a fulcrum-bar 1, which is of curved shape, and to one end of which is pivotally secured one of the gripping aws 2. By preference the fulcrum-bar comprises spaced strips, secured in fixed relation, to provide for the proper support of connected parts and to provide an extended bearing at the foot.
A lever bar 3 is pivotally secured to the jaw 2 intermediate its ends, to the-opposite end of which bar is secured the operating lever 4. The operating lever is passed between the strips of the fulcrum-bar, and projects beyond the same in the form of a handle 5. The operative ends of the jaw 2 and lever 4 terminate on the same plane in the form of points 6, the proximate faces ofsaid jaw and lever immediately above the points being roughened or formed with teeth 7 to provide for gripping the nail.
A hammer is arranged for operative connection with the extractor, said hammer comprising a bar 8 connected to the lever bar 3 and extending upwardly between the strips of the fulcrum-bar. Beyond the fulcrum-bar the bar 8 is reduced to rod like form at 9, on which is slidably supported a head 10, adapted'in reciprocation on the rod to impart a blow to the rod with the effect to force thepoints of the jaw and lever into the material adjacent the nail to be extracted, as is usual in devices of this character.
In use, the foot of the extractor is placed upon the support, and the points of the jaw and lever disposed on opposite sides of the nail to beextracted. The hammer is operated to force the ends of the jaw and lever into the material, after which pressure is applied on the handle of the operating lever with the effect to cause the faces 7 to grip the nail, the continued movement of the lever rocking the fulcrum-bar on the foot, and drawing upward on the nail.
It is to be particularly noted that in the extractor of the present invention, the gripping faces 7 provide for the convenient gripping of the shank of the nail, whereby the device is readily adapted for extracting headless nails'.
The structure is simple, comprising few parts and in use is equally adapted for extracting spikes or nails of any size or character.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is;
A nail extractor comprising a curved fulcrum-bar, a gripping jaw pivotally connected to one end of the bar, the opposite end of the fulcrum-bar serving as a base for the extractor, a lever bar pivotally connected to'the jaw, an operating lever connected to the lever bar and extending beyond the fulcrumbar to provide a handle, a gripping jaw formed on the operating lever to cooperate with the first mentioned gripping aw, and a hammer supported from the lever bar.
