UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDDIE JUDY, OF JOB, WEST VIRGINIA.
SPIKE-FULLERa SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,808, dated November 14, 1899.
Application filed March 4,1899. Serial No. 707,798. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDDIE JUDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Job, in the county of Randolph and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Pulling Spikes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for pulling spikes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is-simple in construction and operation and which is particularly designed for pulling railway-spikes, but may be employed for pulling large nails or spikes of any class or form.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved spike-puller, part of the construction being in section; and Fig. 2, a plan View thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a standard 5, having a base 6 and provided at the top thereof with an arm 7, which projects preferably-at right angles thereto and which is provided with a depending tubular casing 8.
The casing 8 may be of any desired form and is parallel with the standard 5, and the said standard 5 or the arm 7 adjacent thereto is provided with an upwardly-directed fulcrum 9, having jaws 10, between which is pivoted a lever 11, and the shorter arm of the lever 11 terminates over the casing 8, and pivotally connected therewith is a bar 12, which passes down through the casing 8 and is provided at its lower end with curved or segmental spring-jaws 13, which are adapted to grasp the head of a spike or nail and to draw said spike or nail when the device is operated, as hereinafter described.
The greatest diameter of the jaws 13 is much greater than the inner diameter of the casing 8 at its lower end, and when said jaws are drawn upwardly the lower end of said casing forces said jaws inwardly and causes them to securely grasp and hold the head of the nail or spike.
In the operation .of the device the base 6 of the standard 5 is placed adjacent to the nail or spike to be drawn, and the casing Sis suspended directly thereover. The longer end of the lever 11 is then slightly raised, so as to depress the jaws which grasp the head of the spike or nail at each side thereof, and the said longer end of the said lever is then depressed. In this operation the jaws 13 are forced inwardly by the lower end of the easing 8, and said jaws are caused to firmly grasp the head of the spike or nail, and the latter is drawn by the further depression of the longer end of the lever 11.
The casing 8 may be of any desired form or construction, the only object in this connection being to so form the lower end thereof that the jaws 13 will be compressed thereby.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, audit will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spike or nail puller, comprising a standard, an arm supported at the upper end thereof, a frame or casing depending therefrom, a lever pivoted over said standard, a bar pivotally connected with the shorter end of said lever and extending downwardly through said frame or standard, said bar being provided at its lower end with jaws which are contracted by the lower end of said frame or casing when the longer end of said lever is depressed and said bar raised, substantially as shown and described.
2. A spike or nail puller, comprising astand ard, an arm connected with the top thereof, a frame or casing depending from said arm, a lever pivotally supported above-said standard, a bar pivotally connected with the shorter end of said lever and extending downwardly through said frame or casing, and jaws con- :00
nected with the lower end of said bar which are adapted to come in contact with and be contracted by the lower end of said frame or casing when the longer end of said lever is depressed, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 21st day of February, 1899.
