Description
.I. BARSALOUSE &. R. GRAHAM.
Machines for Extracting Spikes.
Patented May 20,1873.
AM. PHOTD-LITHOGIFAPfl/C ca MY, ossorms's moms) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BARSALOUSE AND ROBERT GRAHAM, OF KINGSBURY, ASSIGNORS TO GUSTAVUS A. PRESCOTT, OF SANDY HILL, YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR EXTRACTING SPIKES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,988, dated May 20, 1873 application filed September 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSEPH BARSALOUSE and ROBERT GRAHAM, of the town of Kingsbury, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Extractin g Spikes; and we do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for pulling spikes from railroad ties or other objects without bending or injuring the spikes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of our invention.
A represents a metal bar of any suitable dimensions to form the lever or handle of our device, and at one end of which is a jaw for drawing spikes with heads, and at the other end two jaws for drawing headless spikes. One end of the lever or handle A is forked, and in the same is pivoted a double jaw, B, the points a a of which are about the same distance apart as the thickness of the spike, while an aperture, b, is formed above said points to admit the head of the spike. A
suitable distance from this jaw is a rod or pin, 0, projecting at right angles from the under side of the handle, to form the fulcrum upon which the handle is turned 'to draw the spike, the double jaw B being first slipped over the head of the spike. The other end of the handle or lever A is T-shaped, with a pin, 0, formed at each end and on a line with the arms of the T. -D D are two jaws, pivoted together, and their upper ends bent nearly at right angles, with a hole through each, and slipped over the pins 0 e. The lower ends of the jaws D D form hooks f f, which grasp the spike to be drawn. A suitable distance from this end of the handle is also a rod, 0, to form the fulcrum. When the jaws D D are placed on the headless spike, the more force is brought on I the lever the more the jaws pinch the spike, and draw it out without slipping off.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The handle A, provided with the T-shaped end and journals 0 e, in combination with the jaws D D and fulcrum 0, all arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH BARSALOUSE, ROBERT GRAHAM.
