TAPPET-SETTER.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES PHILIP Mc- KEOWN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident at the Geldenhuis Main Reef Gold Mining Company,Limited, near J ohannesburg, South African Republic, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Tappet-Setter, of which the following is a specification.
It is necessary in stamp-milling to frequently set the tappets on the stamp-stems, as this determines the amount of drop re quired. Consequently as the shoes and dies wear away the tappet has to be raised on the stem a corresponding amount. It also fre quently occurs that the key which secures the tappet to the stem does not fit quite tight, causing the tappet to slip on the stem, with the result that the tappet has to be lowered on the stem. This setting of the tappet is at present usually accomplished by employing overhead tackle by means of which the stamp-stem is suspended. The key is then knocked out of the tappet and the tappet readjusted into its proper position. As the operation has generally to be performed without stopping the remaining stamps of the battery,a certain amount of danger is necessarily involved.
My invention has been designed with the object of providing a simple and inexpensive apparatus by the use of which tappet-setting is easily and quickly accomplished without the difficulties and dangers aforesaid.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which-:-
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the apparatus closed; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly sectional, the collar being slightly opened; Fig. 3, a ratchet-wrench for use in connection with the apparatus; Fig. 4, a view of the screw G with foot H detached. Fig. 5 is a view showing the tappet-setter in operative position on a stamp-stem.
My invention consists of a collar adapted to fit around a stamp-stem constructed in two halves A and B, hinged together at C, the portion being provided with jaws D, be-
tween which a screw-bolt E, formed on the other end of the portion B, is adapted to be received. F is an elongated nut screwed on the inside, so as to be received upon the threaded portion E aforementioned and fur-' nished with a head F, so as to be readily gripped by the ratchet-wrench. (Shown in Fig. 3.) The portion A of the collar is further bored and threaded to receive the screw G, which moves in a plane parallel to the axis of the stamp-stem, said screw G being provided at one end with a head G, so as to be turned by the aforementioned ratchet-wrench,and at the other end with a loose foot II. The construction of the said bolt G is shown in Fig. 4c, in which the foot H is shown detached. This foot H is bored so as to be received onto the end of the bolt G and is held in position by the pin H, which is inserted through the hole H lying in the groove H The foot H, therefore, is attached to but does not turn with the screw G.
In operation (see Fig. 5) a stamp 2, with tappet 3, is shown supported by the finger 1, so as not to be operated by the cam 5. the tappet-setter, in position tightly clamped upon the stamp-stem 2. The key 6 or other device by which the tappet is secured to the stem is then loosened, with the result that the weight of the stamp is taken up by the head II, which bears upon the upper surface of the tappet. On turning the screw G in either direction the stamp-stem 2 will be raised or lowered through the tappet 3, as the case may be, and when adjusted in its proper position relative to the said tappet the key 6 is inserted, so as to tighten the tappet on the stem when the setter is removed from the stem.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved tappet-setter consisting of a collar adapted to be secured around the stamp stem and provided with a vertical screw to raise or lower the stamp-stem through its tappet which has been previously loosened.
