REIN-HOLDEB.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST P. RAsMUssEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denmark, in the county of Lincoln and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rein holders and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly effective in operation and which may be easily and quickly attached to a wagon or other vehicle.
With the above and other objects in view, which will be more apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of elements claimed.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated .a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction therein exhibited, as it is apparent that minor details of construction and proportion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device illustrating the same in applied position upon a wagon body. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view upon the line 44 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates, what may be termed, the body portion of the device. This body portion comprises a substantially rectangular member provided adjacent its extremities with suitable orifices 2 adapted for the reception of retaining elements, such as screws, whereby the plate may be secured upon a vehicle. The plate 1 is provided with integrally formed outstanding ears 3 upon both of its edges, and these ears are provided with alining openings adapted for the reception of a pintle 4.
The numeral 5 designates the flap or securing member of the device. This flap 5 is constructed of any suitable metallic material and has its upper end or edge projecting above the edge of the member 1 and outcurved as is designated by the numeral 6 and clearly illustrated in the figures of the drawing, while the opposite end of the securing hereinafter fully described and Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 465,709.
Positioned between the ears 7 upon the pintle 4 is a flexible element 9. This element 9 is preferably constructed of a coil spring provided with an upstanding member contacting with the securing member 5 while the opposite convolutions of the said spring are secured to the plate 1 below the ears 3, thus effectively providing means whereby the spring 9 compresses the plate 5 against the plate 1.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, one which may be easily and quickly secured to a vehicle and which provides means whereby the rails grasped between the jaws or plates 1 and 5 may be easily and quickly removed when desired.
It will be noted by reference to the several figures of the drawing that the securing member 5 extends a suitable distance above the plate 1, and that by providing the said member 5 with the outwardly curved portion 6 the latter provides a substantial mouth or opening between the top of the plate 1 and the said curved portion 6, whereby the reins may be easily and quickly positioned between the two members 1 and 5 without the necessity of touching the said member 5. It will be further noted that the plate 5 has its end provided with the ears 7 ofiset from its body so that the said ears are spaced away from the plate 1 when the members are connected together. By this arrangement it will be noted that the plate 5 is allowed to describe a comparatively great angle without danger of contacting with the plate 1, and it will be further noted that the upper portion of the spring 9 bearing upon the straightened portion of the said plate 5 and near the center thereof, exerts pressure which will efiectively and securely retain the reins between the plates.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a device for the purpose set forth, a plate having its edges provided with integrally formed offset cars, a second plate having its lower portion bent at an angle from its body and the extremity of the said integrally formed ofiset ears, the ears of both of the offset substantially as and for the purpose 10 members being provided with alined openset forth.
