WHIP-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1912. Serial No. 722,105.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. GRISWOLI), a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghana, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Whip-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to whip locks, and. has for an object to provide a device of this character which can be secured to any wellknown suitable form of socket and arranged thereon whereby when the butt or stock of the whip is inserted in the socket, portions of the lock will be brought into effective clamping engagement therewith, so as to prevent accidental loss of the whip incident to vibratory movements or sudden jars of the vehicle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be constructed of a few pieces of material, one of which is bent to provide a sustaining portion which is associated with a whip socket, so as to hold the lock operatively associated thereon.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a whip lock, wherein a portion thereof is bent on itself and disposed in such proximity with the dash board of the vehicle, so as to form a line clamp and guard to receive the lines and to hold the animal in check when the driver is absent from the vehicle.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the dash-board, showing the lock applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
The lock is preferably constructed of sheet metal, and is shown to include separate pieces 1 and 2, the latter being in the form of an arcuate jaw which is provided a with a gripping surface 3 which is disposed below the plane of a similar surface t on the jaw forming portion 5 of the material, and pivoted at 5 to said jaw forming portion 5, as shown. This construction is such that the respective gripping portions 3 and 4 are designed to engage circumferentially of the stock or butt of the whip at different planes, so as to increase the gripping etliciency of the jaws and positively prevent the actual loss of the whip.
A fixed stud 6 rises from the jaw forming element 2, and as shown, said stud extends through an elongated slot 7 in the jaw portion 5, where it may move freely to permit the desired relative adjustments of the companion gripping surfaces 3 and 4:. This construction is also such that the two jaw portions 2 and 5 of the device are opera tively retained in the required positions, and held against accidental separation. A leaf spring 8 is secured at one of its ends to the jaw portion 5, while the opposite end of the spring is associated with the stud 6, whereby the jaw portions 2 and 3 are held closed normally.
The material 1 from which the jaw portion 5 is formed is relatively long as compared with the length of the material from which the jaw portion 2 is formed, and as shown said material 1, from one extremity of the portion 5, is bent downward, as at 9, and then forwardly, at 10, and then upwardly, as at 11. The portion 11 is spaced from the adjacent portion 9 substantially throughout its length, while the portion 12 is yieldingly retained in mutual contact with the portion 9 and adapted to impinge against the lines, so that the latter may be securely clamped and held against passing over the clash-board, during the absence of the driver of the vehicle. Said portion 11 has its upper extremity flared with relation to the adjacent extremity of the portion 9, so as to facilitate the insertion of the lines between both portions, as is evident. The clamps 13 and 14 are arranged in superimposed relation upon the portion 9, and are adapted to embrace the whip socket 15, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the device may be securely mounted thereon.
From the construction of the device described, it is evident that the effective stock gripping surfaces 3 and 1 are normally disposed in the effective stock receiving opening of the socket 15, whereby when the whip is inserted in the socket the jaw portions 2 and 5, respectively, will be moved relatively to thereby permit the operative setting of the stock of the whip in the socket and insure the clamping engagement of the surfaces 3 and 4 circumferentially therewith.
In order to provide means by which the whip may be locked within the socket during the time that the vehicle is not in use, and the whip'therefore is not needed, lugs 16 and 17 are formed on the outer curved edges of the jaw portions 2 and 5 adjacent their extremities. jaws are brought into closed position, and through which the shackle of an ordinary padlock is adapted to be inserted so that the jaw members may be locked in closed position, thus securing the whip within the socket and preventing the same from being withdrawn by any unauthorized person.
WVhat is claimed is:
l. A whip lock, comprising a member having a socket attaching portion terminating at one end in a fixed jaw, a pivoted jaw movable with relation to the fixed jaw, the fixed jaw having an arcuate guide slot therein, a stud rising from the movable jaw and extending through said slot, and a spring carried by the fixed jaw and operatively associated with the stud whereby to hold both jaws closed with relation to each other.
2. A whip lock comprising a member having a socket attaching portion terminating at one end in a fixed jaw, a pivoted jaw movable with relation to the fixed jaw, the fixed jaw having an arcuate guide slot therein, a stud rising from the movable jaw and extending through said slot, and a spring carried by the fixed jaw and operatively associated with the stud whereby to hold both jaws closed with relation to each other, and lugs formed on both of said jaws and provided with openings adapted to aline when the jaws are in closed position said lug openings adapted to receive the shackle of a lock.
