Description
J. s. BROUGH.
REIN HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 21, 1909.

I FCE.
ERIN-HOLDER.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BROUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Reeds, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rein holders, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means adapted to be connected to the dash board of a vehicle for holding the reins securely when the driver has left the vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple rein holder made of a single piece of resilient metal for clasping a rein, means being provided for securing the holder to a dash board.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a dash board having secured thereto rein holders made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the rein holders detached from the dash board. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a dash board which may be of the shell or any preferred form, preferably provided with a rectangular metal frame 2 inclosed within the leather layers of the dash board. Secured preferably to the opposite sides of the dash board 1 are the rein holders, each consisting of a pair of spaced lugs 3 having alining perforations 4: near the opposite ends of said lugs. The holder is preferably formed from a single piece of Specification of Letters Patent.

sheet metal, and the lugs 3 are connected together by the intermediate portion 5.
Formed integral with the portion 5 and extending above the same is the spring clasp for the reins, said clasp comprising convolutions 6 and 7. The rein holders may be secured one to each side of the dash board, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of the screw bolts and nuts, said bolts 8 passing through the metal frame 2 of the dash board and through the lugs of the rein holder.
In using the rein holders the reins are passed up between the convolutions 6 and 7 at the point a, and the reins are clamped between said portions 6 and .7 and held firmly in position whenever the driver desires to leave the vehicle. The reins can be readily detached from the holders by drawing them down out through the opening at a.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the rein holders may be manufactured at low cost, can be readily applied to any dash board, will firmly hold a rein between the convolutions of the holder, and the reins can be readily detached therefrom whenever required.
I claim 2-- A rein holder formed from a single piece of sheet metal having parallel lugs bent to inolose the side edge of a dash board, means for securing said holder to the dash board, and an integral convolute coil formed upon the outer end of the holder for clamping a rein between the resilient convolutions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. BROUGH.
