Be it known that I, CARL PAUL UHLMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Rein-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to rein-holders, and has for its object the production of a reinholder which is characterized byits simplicity of structure and fewness of parts; also, by the ease with which it may be attached to a dashboard, a seat, or to any other convenient part of a buggy or other vehicle or to a hitchingpost, and by the ease with which a pair of reins may be inserted in the holder and securely held thereby, so as to be readily at hand in case of an emergency.

The drawings show two forms in which my invention may be embodied and the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device attached to a dashboard and a pair of reins inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification.

1 represents a supporting-plate, preferably of sheet metal.

2 is a plate between which and the plate 1 the dashboard 12 may be clamped and the device securely held thereto by bolts 3, passing through the dashboard and plates 1 and 2, the bolts being held in place by nuts 4. It is obvious that the plate 1 might be secured to a hitching-post by means of screws or other fastening devices, in which case the plate 2 would be dispensed with. The plate 1 is bent over to form a horizontal portion 5 and a guard 6. Secured to the part 5 are pins 7 7, upon which are journaled clamping rollers or cylinders 8 8. The pins 7 are eccentrically placed with respect to the cylinders 8 and are so situated that when the reins are placed between the cylinders a forward pull on the reins will cause the surfaces of the cylinders to approach each other, and thereby tightly clamp the reins between them. The surfaces of the cylinders are preferably roughened, as by the longitudinal grooves 9.

11 represents a spring secured at each end to the peripheries of the cylinders by screws 10. These screws are preferably situated at such a position upon the periphery as to leave a space between the cylinders which is somewhat narrower than the thickness of a pair of reins. The spring 11 expands and permits the reins to be easily inserted between the cylinders, whereupon the elasticity of the spring holds the reins clamped with slight pressure between the cylinders, and any pull upon the reins tends to clamp the reins tightly, owing to the movement of the cylinders upon the pins 7. The spring 11 is in-' form of plate 1 is used; but the pins 7 aresituated nearer to the guard 6 than in the preferred form shown, that the spring 11 may be inclosed in the guard.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rein-holder consisting of a plate having one edge bent over to form a guard, parallel cylinders eccentrically pivoted upon said plate, and a spring connecting said cylinders and disposed within said guard.

2. A rein-holder consisting of a supportingplate having one edge bent over to form a guard, a clamping-plate, parallel roughened cylinders eccentrically pivoted upon said supporting-plate, and a coil-spring attached to the periphery of each cylinder and disposed within said guard.

3. A rein holder comprising an angular plate having the vertical part thereof provided with means for attaching said plate to a suitable object, parallel pins extending upwardl y from a horizontal part of said angular plate, gripper-cylinders eccentrically mounted on said pins, and a single spring fastened at its end portions to said gripper-cylinders.
