To all whom it may concern:

-Be it known that I, HARRY L. Ninn, a subject` of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cuspidors the object. of the invention being the provision of an improved sanitary cuspidor having a pedal operated lid which shall at all times present a neat and cleanly appearance and which shall be inexpensive in construction and adapted for use in public plltces such as hotels, saloons, stores and the A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the interior of the main compartment or expectoration receptacle of the cuspidor is rendered readily accessible for cleaning purposes, and means whereby the operating parts are protected from the expectorations of users of the device.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

Vith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cuspidor in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a removable member adapted to seat in the expectoration compartment or receptacle of the cuspidor, Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the action of the operating parts of the device, and Fig. L is a partial top plan view.

Referring now to the drawings 1 designates the rectangular compartment or expectoration receptacle and 2 the removable top member thereof which is in the form of a frustum of a pyramid and is provided with an opening 3 in its bottom, the object of the latter being to reduce the area of visible matter in the receptacle 1 and thus render the device less oensive to the user.

The member 2 is readily removable for cleansing purposes and when in place seats on the tops of the corner pieces et provided at the corners of the receptacle 1 which also Each corner of the member 2 is provided with a rubber bumper 5 on which the hinge coverl 6 is adapted to seat when in its normal or closed position.

A flaring or diverging base 7 is soldered to the receptacle 1, and in the space inclosed thereby the foot lever or pedal 8 is mounted, the same being fulorumed to the hanger 8 which depends from and is secured to the bottom 9 of the receptacle 1. The foot lever 8 projects through the slot 10 provided in the base 7 at one end and is pivoted to the connecting-rods 11 at the other, a leaf sprin 12 being provided to normally maintain said pedal in the full line or raised position. The foot lever 8 is substantially Y-shaped and is connected to the connecting-rods 11 as shown in Figs. 3 and 1. A housing 13 is soldered to the receptacle 1 and the base 7 which serves'to inclose the connecting-rods 11 and their connections to the cover 6, thus protecting the same from the expectorations of users of the cuspidors. The hinge cover 6 is provided with a stiffening bead 14 and with a rearward extension 15, the latter being provided with downwardly extending perforated ears 16. Soldered securely to each ear 16 is a crank arm 17 having one end extending through the ear perforation and pivoted in a side of the housing 13 and the other pivoted to the upper end of a connectingrod 11 so that when the connecting-rods are moved upwardly when the pedal is depressed the cover 6 will open as indicated by dotted lines. Slots 18 are formed 1n the base 7 to make clearance for the lever 8 and rods 11 as shown in Figs. 3 and A, and slots 16 are provided in the housing 13 for the ears 16.

It will be noted that the operating mechanism is almost completely inclosed, which fact constitutes an important feature of my invention since said mechanism is not exposed to dust and dirt and the expectora tions of users of the device as aforesaid.

The device is preferably constructed of sheet metal throughout, but any well known and suitable material maybe employed.

While I have shown what I deem to be the preferred form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fairly fall witli in the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a cuspidor, an expectoration receptacle or compartment, a housing connected to said compartment, ay flaring base connected to said compartment inclosing a space beneath the latter, a hanger depending from and connected to the bottom of said receptacle, a pedal projecting through a slot provided in said base pivoted to said hanger, a spring connected to said base adapted to maintain said pedal in its raised or normal position, said lever being Y-shaped, connecting-rods pivoted to two adjacent eX- tremities of said pedal and extending upwardly therefrom into said housing through slots provided in said base, a cover for said compartment having ears hinged to said housing, and means connecting said connecting-rods and said cover whereby the latter is raised when said pedal is depressed, substantially as described.

2. In a cuspidor, a rectangular receptacle having a flaring base, a frusto-pyramidal removable member adapted to seat in said receptacle, rubber bumpers positioned at the corners of said member, a hinge cover adapted to seat on said bumpers, a pedal operating mechanism for raising said cover,

and a housing at one side of said receptacle inclosing the operating mechanism directly connected to said cover, substantially as described.

3. In a cuspidor, an expectoration re ceptacle or compartment, a housing connected to said compartment, a flaring base connected to said compartment inclosing a space beneath the latter, a hanger depending from and connected to the bottom of said receptacle, a pedal projecting through a slot provided in said base pivoted to said hanger, a spring connected to said base adapted to maintain said pedal in its raised or normal position, said lever being Y- shaped, connecting-rods pivoted to two adjacent extremities of said pedal and extending upwardly therefrom into said housing through slots provided in said base, a cover for said compartment having ears hinged in said housing, and means connecting said connecting-rods and said cover whereby the latter is raised when said pedal is depressed, said connecting means consisting of cranks soldered to said ears, substantially as described.
