simple, inexpensive, and efficient dust-pan adapted to be held in proper operative posi-' tion on the foot of a person to obviate the necessity of the person using it bending over each time dust is brushed into the pan, thereby enabling theperson using it to remain in a comfortable upright position and to handle a broom or similar device effectively.

ing adapted to be maintained in an open position to permit dust to enter and capable of being readily closed when desired.

Another object of the invention is to provide a dust-pan adapted to fit any foot and capable also of being used by hand similar to an ordinary dust-pan when desired.

The invention consists in'the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings forming part of this specification and in which like numerals of'reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dust-pan constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a dust-pan constructed of any suitable mate rial and provided with a covered rear portion, to the top. 2 of which is hinged a door 3, arranged in a slightly-inclined position when closed, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The

hinges 4c are located at the upper edge of the door and the latter is held normally closed by a pair of coiled springs 5, having extended terminals 6 and forming arms and secured, respectively, to the upper face of the top 2and to the outer face of the door, which is automatically closed by the said hinges when the door is free to move.

I The door is opened by an operating-rod 8, coiled at its rear end at 9 and extended through a slot or opening 10. of the rear portion of the top of the casing. The rod 8 has its front end curved upward and pivoted to an arm 11, which extends rearward from the inner face of the door, near the top thereof. The rear portion of the rod is provided at the bottom with a series of shouldered notches 12, arranged to engage the top 2 of the casing at the bottom of the slot or opening, whereby the door is maintained in an opened position to permit dust to be swept into the rear portion of the dust-pan.

The back of the dust-pan is provided near the bottom with an inwardly-tapered socket 13, formed by indenting the rear wall and extending the bottom, as shown. This socket is adapted to receive the front portion of a foot,

'andin order to enable a dust-pan to fit on any foot a spring 14 is provided. The spring 14:, which has its front end secured to the wall of the socket at the front thereof, is curved and presents alower concave face, and its outer end is bent upward slightly to provide a smooth engaging portion. The dust-pan is firmly but yieldably clamped to the foot of the wearer by the spring and is adapted to fit any foot;

. The dust-pan is provided at its back with an upwardly-extending handle 15 to permit it to be handled like an ordinary dust pan. A spring-clip 16, of approximately rectangular form, is mounted upon the top of the casing for conveniently holding a brush or whisk-broom.

In use the dust-pan is placed on a foot of a person and the door is held open by the operating-rod, which is maintained in engagement with the casing by gravity, When it is desired to close the door, theflrod is lifted out of engagement with the toppf the casing and the springs effect'th'e closing movement;

That I claim is- 1 V 1. The combination of a dust-pan provided with a covered rear portion, a springactuated door depending from the front of the covered portion and hinged to the same, and a gravity-acting operating-rod connected with to opening and provided with notches for engaging the dust-pan at the opening, substantially as described.
