To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a dust-retainer for household dust-pans, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and convenient arrangement and mechanism whereby the closure-plate or lid for the dustreceiving chamber can be conveniently ma nipulated by the user, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the present invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dust-pan embodyingthe present improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation with the parts in a closed condition; Fig. 3, a similar view with the parts in an opened condition to permit the dust or sweepings to be swept into the dustholding chamber; Fig. 4, a detail transverse section at line as m, Fig. 2. l

Referring to the drawings, 1.repre sents the body portion of the dust-pan of an y-ordinary'. form and construction.-

2 is an angular coveror member hinged at 3 to the rear wall 4 of the main body of the pan and with its substantially vertical front plate or wall 5 adapted when in a closed position of the parts to rest upon the bottom plate 6 of the dust-pan to form a closed dustreceiving chamber at the rear portion of the dust-pan and into which the dust and the like is adapted to be swept, with the said cover in an open or raised position.

7 is a fixed handle or grip member secured to and projecting rearwardly from the rear wall 4 of the dust-pan.

8 is a movable handle or grip member attached by a suitable link connection 9 with the cover 2 at a point forward of its pivot con nection 3 with the body portion of the dustpan. At about midway its length this handle 13 is a spring-loop arranged between the v handle members and adapted to force the rear ends of the same apart, and in a preferred construction the respective ends of said spring will be bent to form bearing-points which engage in recesses in the handle members to retain the springin place, as shown in Fig. 3.

Inmy preferred construction of the parts, as illustrated in the drawings, the handle members '7 and 8 will be formed of sheet I metal bent into a semicircular shape, and one member will be provided with pendent ears '10, through a'pivot-hole in which the pivotwire 12 passes to engage in a corresponding pivot-hole in the other handle member. Such pivot-wire 12 is preferably formed by a springloop 13, as illustrated in Fig. 3, so as to be capable of ready and convenient removal and replacement in-an operation of repairing or replacing a broken or worn part of the dustpan. 7

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s

1. In a dust-pan ofthe characterherein described, the combination of a pan-body, a hinged cover forming a dust-chamber at the ,rear of the same, a fixed handle member socured to the dust-pan body, and a movable handle member pivoted midway its length to the -fixed handle member and operatively connected to the hinged cover at a pointforward of the hinge connection of said cover to the body of the dust-pan, substantially as set forth.

2. In a dust-pan of the character herein do scribed, the combination of a pan-bod y, a hinged cover forming a dust-chamber at the rear of the same, a fixed handle member secured to the dust-pan body, a movable handle member pivoted midway its length to the fixed handle member and operatively connected to the hinged cover at apoint forward of the hinge connection of said cover to the body of the dust-pan, and a spring-loop forming the pivotal connectionbetween said handle members, substantially as set forth.

3. In a dust-pan of the character herein described, the combination of a pan-body, a hinged cover forming a dust-chamber at the rear of the same, a fixed handle member secured to the dust-pan body, a movable han- \VILLIAM L. HARRIS.
