ANDREVT V. NYBERG', 0F Gr MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RAND MARAIS, MICHIGAN.
BEDSTEAD.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1909.
Patented May 17, 1910. Serial No. 490,781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID N. citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Marais, in the county of Alger and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads.
It has for its object to provide for readily varying the width of the bedstead, whereby it may be converted from a single into a do-uble bed, and to carry out said object in a simple and inexpensive manner.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features' of construction, combination and arrangement of part-s, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention; Figure l is a front elevation of a bed showing my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I preferably constructed the foot and head sections of separate parts l and 2. In the construction shown in Fig. l the parts l and 2 consist of an upright or supporting leg, a, and two horizontally arranged tubes, I), which are partly by diagonally extending braces, c. The tubes, b, of the parts l and 2 are arranged to lie parallel with each other in a horizontal plane and to be clamped together by the clamping devices 10. These clamping devices comprise a band of flexible metal 11 which is connected at one end to suitable ears l2 formed on the extended sides 13 of a pressure plate l5. Pivoted to GARBEP., a
the pressure plate is a cam lever 16 which has its outer end provided with a lug 17 adapted to engage the free end of the strap band 1l so that the straps may be drawn around thetubes. Interposed bet-Ween the tubes is a rubber disk 18 which is provided with apertures 19 to be engaged by the opposite sides-of the band whereby the disk is held in place. This disk permits the parts to give so that the cam may pass from one part of the arc in which it travels to the opposite side to permit the locking of the parts. The disk also prevents frictional wear on the tubes one upon the other. At each end of the tubes I preferably provide loops 20 which surround the adjacent tube and hold the parts together in proper relation. This construction is clearly shown in Fig. 4:.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction andoperation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
In a bedstead, the combination with a pair of uprights, of parallel tubes connected to each of said uprights, and extending horizontally therefrom, of diagonal braces con necting the parallel tubes, the tubes of one upright adapted to lie in parallel relation with the tubes of the other upright, clips on the ends of said tubes adapted to surround the co-acting tubes tohold them in proper relation, a band clamp surrounding the tubes intermediate the clips to hold them in ad justed position, and a friction washer carried by the clamp and arranged between the tubes.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
