SMOKE-STACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application filed May 27, 1909. Serial No. 498,607.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nebraska City, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Smoke-Stack, of which the, following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide an improved smoke stack or chimney which is strong and durable, and also simple and inexpensive. The stack is composed of a series of hollow tile sections surrounded by a metallic casing containing a filler of cement.
The invention also has for its object to provide an improved joint between the tile sections, and to provide means for the attachment of guys.
With the hereinstated objects in View, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of arts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawing hereto annexed forming a part of this specification, in which drawings- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a stack or chimney constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l..
As shown in the drawings, the stack or chimney comprises a series of hollow tile sections 5, which are assembled endwise to the desired height. The contiguous ends of a pair of sections have flat and inclined faces 6 and 7 respectively, the fiat faces opening to the outer surface of the stack, and the inclined faces to the inner surface thereof, whereby a recess is had on one of the ends of the sections, and a bead on the contiguous end of the adjacent section, in which recess the said bead seats. By shaping the ends of the sections as stated, a joint is had between the same which requires no binder, as the sections are all held in proper alinement.
Surrounding the tile structure is a metallic casing 8 which extends from the base to the top of the stack. This casing is spaced a short distance from the outer surface of the tile sections, and in said space is received a cement'filler 9 which will be packed tightly therein and which entirely surrounds the tile sections. After the cement sets, a
strong and rigid structure is had which will successfully withstand high winds. The ends of the casing are bent over the base and the top of the stack respectively as clearly shown in Fig. l, whereby the tile sections are securely clamped to ether.
The stack is widenec or enlarged at its base by flaring the end of the casing, so that the same sized tiles may be used throughout the entire height of the stack with the exception of the first one, which, preferably has a bell mouth 10 as shown which tits over a suitable cast iron cap at the end of the brick base.
At a suitable distance from the base of the stack, is a band 11, said band being securely riveted to the easing 8. To said band are riveted or otherwise secured plates 12 having outstanding perforated ears 13 for the attachment of guy wires or rods 14.
The advantage of the hereindescribed structure is that it is not liable to damage by varying temperatures, and it is proof against corrosion from creosote, sulfuric gases, etc., the sections 5 being glazed or vitrified tile, cement, clay or other suitable material. The casing 8 has a coating of asphaltum to prevent rust.
The stack can be easily built, and is strong and rigid, the filler 9 solidifying the whole structure. In the drawing, the stack is shown as circular in cross section, but the shape is immaterial, and may be varied. It is however, advisable to have the shape of the casing conform to the shape of the tile sections.
Vhat is claimed is:
A stack comprising a series of hollow tile sections assembled endwise, a metallic casino' surrounding the sections, the upper anc lower ends of the easing extending over the ends of the upper and lower tile sections for binding said sections together, and a filler of cement between the casing and tile sections. a
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT HENRY.
