UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. VAUGHAN, OF MIDDLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
CONSTRUCTION OF CHIMNEYS.
VSPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,362, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed November 23, 1885. Serial No. 183,727. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. VAUGHAN, of Middleborough, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Construction of Chimneys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This improved chimney is composed of inner and outer pipes made of clay or other suitable plastic material, molded and baked, and preferably glazed on their exposed surface, and of an intermediate filling made of lime mortar orother suitable plastic material, and having a Ventilating iiue or iiues formed in the same, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, fcrming a part of this speciiication, Figure l is a central sectional elevation of my improved chimney. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line x x, Fig. l.
In the drawings, A is an inner, and B is an outer, pipe, and C is an intermediate filling between them.
Dis the chimney-passage, and E E are series of Ventilating-passages through the lilling O, and extending vertically, the whole making the improved chimney of this invention, and as hereinafter described.
The inner and outer pipes, A B, are made of clay or other suitable plastic material, molded and baked, and preferably glazed on their exposed surfaces a b on the inside and outside of the chimney. These pipes are in separate sections or lengths, placed end to end, and jointed at their ends, preferably with inclining faces d, leading` downward to the exposed surfaces a b of the pipes, and either with or without a flange, as at f, Fig. l.
As the chimney is constructed of the pipesections placed one upon the other end to end, as above stated, the space between the inner and outer pipes is filled in with lime mortar or other suitable plastic material, so as to make the filling G, and as so filled in iron core-bars are used, about which to mold the filling material to produce thereby the ventilating-ilues E, the core-bars being removed and replaced from time to time as the building up of the chimney goes on. These iucs E extend from the bottom to the top of the chimney through the lling O, and they may be of any desired number. These Ventilatingpassages are open at their lower and upper ends, and the chimney, when completed, is to be finished at its top in any suitable manner.
The Ventilating-fines allow a Y circulation of air through them, thus acting to protect the building from the heat of the chimney-due, also to keep the chimney dry and in better condition for use at all times.
H is a thimble passing from the outside to the inside of the chimney to receive a stovepipe or to make other connection with a firegrate, Snc. This thimble is made of cast metal, audit has a passage,`g, in its thickness and around its opening J, to connect at either end the Ventilating-passage, which it may intersect, by its insertion in the construction of the chimney.
The downward inclinedjointing of the pipesection, and in the direction stated, prevents moisture working from theinside and the outside ofthe chimney into the lling.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A chimney composed of separately made outer and inner pipes, A B, of clay or other similar material, molded and baked, and each pipe in sections suitablyjointed at their ends, in combination with a filling, O, of lime mortar or other similar plastic material, placed and molded in the space between them, and inclosing a vertical Ventilating passage or pas sages, E, molded therein as the chimney is built, and open at top and bottom, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. A chimney composed of inner and outer pipes, A B, made in sections, and an intermediate iilling, O, having Ventilating passage or passages in and through it, and a thimble, H, to connect the chimney-passage with a stove, &c., which has a surrounding independent passage which connects the Ventilatingpassage above and below said thimble, substantiallyas described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN G. VAUGHAN.
