Description

(No Model.)
M. HINKLEY.
CHIMNEY TOP.
Patented June 18 qwitmeaoeo UNITED STATES PATENT (jFFICEt MORTIMORE HINKLEY, OF MERCER, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIMNEY-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,667, dated June 18, 1889. Application filed February 2, 1889; Serial No. 298,442. (No model.)
To 61/ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMORE HINKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mercer, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in chimney-tops; and it consists in certain novel construction and arrangement of devices, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a chimney-top embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the lower section of the inner shell. Fig. 4 is a similar View of an intermediate section of the inner shell. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of the chimney-top.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the outer shell of the improved chimney-top, which consists of the base B, the intermediate section 0, and the cap D. The base rests 011 the upper end of the chimney when in the operative position, and is re duced at its upper edge to form a wash b. The intermediate section rests on the upper edge of the base, and is provided with the interior depending points or lugs c c at its corners, which fit in the corners of the base, and thereby hold the intermediate section from lateral movement, and the cap, which may be of any preferred ornamental shape, bears on the upper edge of the intermediate section, and is provided on its exterior, near the corners, with the depending cars (l d, which bear against the outer side of the intermediate section and prevent the displacement of the cap.
E represents the inner shell, arranged concentric with the outer shell, and comprising the lower section F, the intermediate section G, and the upper section II, which projects above the upper edge of the cap, as shown in the drawings.
The lower section of the inner shell is provided with lateral projections ff, which bear at their ends against the inner surface of the base, and maintain the said section concentrio with the base, and the intermediate and upper sections G and H are provided with the interior depending points or lugs g and h at their corners, which fit respectively in the corners of the section next below;
The sections of the inner shell are taller than the sections of the outer shell, in order to break joints therewith, and also project above the upper edge of the same, or the inner shell may be composed of a greater number of sections than the outer shell.
After arranging the parts of the chimneytop, as described, on the upper end of the chimney, mortar or cement is introduced into the space between the adjacent sides of the two shells, which, when it becomes set, secures the parts of the top firmly together. The upper surface of the said filling between the upper edge of the inner shell to the upper edge of the cap is inclined downward to form a wash 1.
The advantages of the improved chimney top are that, being in section,it is more easily handled and put in place; further, great strength is attained without the use of much metal; further, no mortar-joints are exposed to the action of the weather, and therefore there is no danger of a weakening of the structure; and, further, as there are no aligning-joints, a solid compact structure is formed which will resist great lateral strain.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a chimney-top, the combination of the outer shell, the inner shell projecting above the upper end of the outer shell, and the i11- terposed filling, which forms a wash between the upper ends of the said shells, substantially as specified.
2. In a chimney-top, the combination of the outer shell, consisting of a base, a cap, and intermediate section, the inner shell containing a lower section F, provided with lateral projections f f, which hear at their ends against the inner surface of the base, and the intermediate and upper sections G and H, provided with depending points or lugs g and h, to engage the corners of the next lower section, and the filling interposed between the sides of the said shells, substantially as specified.
3. In a chimney-top, the combination of the inner shell, the outer shell consisting'of a base B, adapted to rest on the upper end of the chimney, the intermediate section C,provided with depending points or lugs at its corners to engage the inner corners of the base, and the cap resting on the upper edge of the intermediate section and provided with the outer depending ears, which bear m against the sides of the, section 0, and the interposed filling, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORTIMORE HINKLEY.
