To all whom may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER E. LoRENzEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Mariners Harbor, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Oowls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in ohimney-cowls for preventing the smoking of chimneys and producing an effective draft in the chimney,whatever be the direction of the wind.-
The invention. consists of a chimney-cowl which comprises the novel features of constructionand combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the side walls are arranged horizontal openings 0, of semicircular shape, which extend with their straight ends nearly across the side walls of the casing. Into said semicircular or segmental openingso are inserted laterally-curved scoop-shaped and .u wardly and inwardly inclined deflecting-p ates e, which project to the outside of the casing to a less extent than to the inside of the same, said deflecting-plates being attached at 'the ends by rivets or otherwise to the side walls of the casing and soldered intermediatelyof their length to the inwardly-extending integral flanges e at the lower curved edges of the segmental openings 0. The cowl shown in Fig. 1 is'provided withltwo scoop-shaped deflecting-plateson each side; but it is obvious that a greater number may be arranged,
according to the size of the cowl.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A chimney-cowl comprising a rectangular casing having semicircular openings in the side walls thereof, the curved edges of said openings being lowermost and provided with inwardly-disposed. integral flanges, and laterally-curved deflecting-plates supported intermediately of their length on said flanges and-abutting at their side edges against the corners of said openings, said plates being inclined upwardly and inwardly and tapered toward their upper inner ends.
