EDMOND BOS, OF MONTEREAU, FRANCE.
DRAFT-INCREASING CHIMNEY-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J u1y16, 1912.
Application filed November 22, 1911. Serial No. 661,851.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDMOND Bos, a citizen of the French Republic, and resident of Montereau, Seine-et-Marne, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Increasing Chimney-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to chimneys and the improvement consists in providing the top of the chimney with a device which increases the draft, prevents the smoke from flowing back in case of air whirling or strong wind and shelters the interior of the chimney against the rain.
The draft increasing device which is fixed on top of the chinmey and may be constructed either with iron sheets or with specially shaped stones, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a view of the chimney top made of sheet iron. Fig. 2 is the top View corresponding to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the axis of the chimney top at an enlarged scale.
The draft increasing chimney top shown in the drawings comprises a tubular portion 1 made of sheet iron and provided with preferably staggered holes 2 disposed in vertical rows. Behind said holes, inside of the tube 1 are disposed pocket-shaped wind directing paddles or troughs 3, the upper edges of which extend beyond the upper edges of the holes in the chimney top so as to conveniently guide the wind therein. Said troughs are open at their upper end only. The rear wall 4 of said troughs has a slope toward the exterior; it is applied on the lower edge of the hole 2 and is provided with a curved bottom 5 which extends outside the tubular portion 1 and which terminates in a horizontally directed end portion. Owing to this arrangement whatever may be the direction of the wind around the chimney, (upward, downward or horizontal) as shown by the arrows 6, 7 and 8, the wind Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the directing troughs always act as draft increasing nozzles, as they are always directing upwardly the wind blowing on the chimney, thus producing a strong suction within the latter. As such wind directing troughs are provided all around the chimney, it is indifferent in which direction the wind blows. The stronger the wind, the stronger is the drawing effect of the chimney top upon the column of smoke inside the chimney.
The herein described chimney top, made either of iron or of stone, may be adapted without any difliculty to existing chimneys. Owing to the special sucking effect, a better yield of the combustible is obtained or a lower quality of combustible may be used. A chimney provided with said device does not require the same height as a chimney performing the same work but non-provided with said device. Said chimney top may also be used as a ventilating means for rooms and the like.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A chimney formed with a plurality of openings, a trough adjacent each opening, each trough comprising a bottom and side walls, the bottom of the trough extending through the opening and the major portion of the upper part thereof being inclined upwardly while its lower portion is curved, the upper edge of the bottom terminating some distance above and is spaced from the upper edge of the opening, the lower edge of said bottom terminating some distance from the outer surface of the chimney to form a chute for the passage of air.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
EDMOND BOS. Witnesses:
