UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
WILLIAM R. THOMAS, 0F PICKENS, WEST VIRGINIA.
CONCRETE HEADSTONE.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pickens, in the county of Randolph and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Concrete Headstones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tomb stones.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a tomb stone which shall be admirably adapted for containing and displaying a picture of the person in whose memory the tomb stone is to be erected, the invention comprehending a picture mount adapted to be removably mounted in a recess in a tomb stone, and means adapted to secure the picture mount in applied posit-ion against accidental displacement.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tomb stone constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a det-ail perspective view of the picture mount. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the horizontal plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direct-ion indicated by the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates a tomb stone which may be constructed of concrete or any other material suitable for the purpose and which may be of any suitable or appropriate design. At a suitable point the tomb stone is provided with a recess 2 opening out through one side thereof and adapted to receive a ,picture mount 3. The picture mount 3 may be constructed of cement or any other material suitable for the purpose and is provided with a recess 4 opening out through the front and one side thereof. The side walls of the recess 4 are grooved as at 5 for the reception of the edges of a glass panel 6, picture 7, a padding 8, and a backboard 9. The panel 6 protects the picture 7 Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application led June 5, 1909.
from the elements and the padding 8 and Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
Serial No. 500,390.
back-board 9 retain the picture in close contact with the panel, these parts being inserted into the recess 4 through the open side thereof. The front of the mount 3 about the recess 4 is formed as at 10 to similate the appearance of a picture frame of a conventional type. Vhen the mount 3 is in applied position one side wall of the recess 2 closes the open side of the recess 4 and prevents the displacement of the panel 6, picture 7, padding 8 and back board 9. The mount 3 is secured in applied position by means of a key 11 engaging in keyways 12 and 13 formed respectively in the under side of the mount and in the bottom wall of the recess 2. The inner end of the key ts in a socket 14 formed in one side wall of the recess 2, and the key is adapted to be applied and removed through an opening 15 formed in the opposite side wall of the recess.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that I provide a tomb stone which is adapted to contain and display to the best advantage a picture of the person in whose memory the tomb stone is erected, that the picture is fully protected from the elements, and that the construction of the tomb stone is strong, durable and etlicient. It should also be apparent that the tomb stone may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A tomb stone provided with a recess, a picture mount located in the recess and provided with a picture receiving recess having an entrance opening, one side wall of the recess in the tomb stone closing said entrance opening, and means securing the picture mount in applied position.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. THOMAS.
