THOMAS BARNES, OF ANACONDA, MONTANA.
WATER-GAGE SHIELD.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'744,710, dated November 24, 1903.
I Application filed May 9, 1903. Serial No, 156,457. (No model.)
y against breakage by contact, a still further object' being to provide a shield which vWillafford a clear view of the water-tube at all times, so that the condition of water within the boiler can be readily seen. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a water-tube shield which can be quickly and easily attached to or detached from the boiler. f
- With these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in providing an opensided frame having glass panels, said opensided frame being adapted to envelop the water-tube, and means connected to the boiler for supporting the said frame.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the practical application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the upper end of the frame having the glass panels arranged therein. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the said frame and panels. Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in section and showing the manner of supporting the frame. Fig. 5 is the plate from which the frame is supported. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the bracket carrying the plate. Fig. 7 is an inverted perspective View of the coping arranged upon the top of the'frame. Fig. 8 is a sectional view illustrating aslightlymodified form of construction.
In carrying out my invention I employ an open sided frame comprising the upright pieces A, the top connecting-pieces B, and the bottom connecting-pieces C. The upright pieces A are grooved vertically, as shown at A', the top connecting-pieces slotted, as shown at B', and the bottom connecting-pieces C are also grooved, as shown at C', said grooves and slots being arranged to receive the glass panels D, which-are slid into the frames from the top, and it will be noted that I employ ltwo pieces of glass, thereby rendering the protection doubly effective.v After the glass panels have been arranged in the frame a grooved coping E is arranged upon the top of the frame and secured in any suitablemanner, thereby holding the glass panel securely in position. This frame, as before st-ated, is open at one side, said opening being arranged vat the rear, and this enables the frame to be arranged about the ordinary water-gage tube W, which is connected tothe boiler in the usual orV any approved manner, and for the purpose of supporting the shield in this pof sition I provide the rear upright pieces A with downwardly-extending hooks F adjacent to the upper and lower ends of the uprights, which hooks are adapted to engage openings Geproduced in theplate II, which is arranged adjacent the shield or head of the boiler, said plate being held by means of a bracket I, se-
curely fastened to the head or shield of theV boiler.
It will thus be understood from this description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the shield can be quickly and easily connected to or disconnected from the boiler and that when' in'use it will entirely envelop the water-tube, thereby protecting it from contact with the exterior objects and thereby preventing breakage.
It is also obvious that the Water-tube is -always exposed to view, and the condition of course be used with this construction, and the panels of glass will also be made U-shaped. In all other respects, however, the construction of the two frames will be identical.
It is obvious that a single panel of glass can be employed instead of a double panel,
In Fig. s
and it will also be understood that the shield l of a frame comprising the grooved upright can be used in connection with a iubricelorl pieces, the slotted top` pieces, and grooved '5 tube as Well as a Water-gage tube. bottoni pieces, the glass panels and the cop- Having ILhus fully described my invention, ing arranged upon the top of the frame, the

Letters Patent, isplate having openings therein adapted to be l. A shield of the kind described, coinprisengaged by the hooks, and the bracket for se zo ing an open-sided frame, having the double curing the plate, substantially as described. glass pane1s,the hooks connected to the fram e,
ro and the plate connected to the boiler, said plete having apertures adapted to be engaged by the hooks, as set forth.
2. Ashield ofthe kind described, consisting THOMAS BARNES.
