Be it known that we, h IAX'LMILIAN CHARLES- ScHwniNER'r, residing in Vest Hoof New Jersey, and Hnnnr I. KRAFT, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of of the United States, have invented certain Bottle Stoppers, of which the following is This invention relates to water bottle stoppers and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The invention is particularly directed to a form of st'opper in which the packing washer is held by a plate secured to the bottom of the stopper. Such a stopper is I illustrated in our Patent No. 902,259, dated October27, 1908.
The presentinvention is particularly die" rected to the means for attaching the retaining device to the stopper.
In the drawings which illustrate one form of our invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the mouth of a hot water bottle having a stopper provided with our invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of .the stopper detached; Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the several parts of the stopper detached before the assembling operation.
Referring to the'drawings, let A indicate the neck of a hot Water bottle having vul canized therein or otherwise attached thereto a screw-threaded socket member B, having a seat C.
D indicates the stopper which is provided with external threads which engage the: socket member B. The stopper 1) carries at its lowerend a packing washer or disk E which is confined in place by anannular plate F, the stopper being provided .with an integral projecting portion G which engages the inner flange of the plate F. In constructing the stopper, the body portion is first drawn into the form of a stopper having a cylindrical projecting portion at its bottom as indicated in Fig. 3. The plate F is then applied to the stopper so that such projecting portion enters the central aperture of the plate, whereupon it is upset, so as to engage the plate'..as shown in Fig. l. The disk or washer Eis then sprung in 1 place between the plate and the bottom of the stoppter. According to the present invention we utilize the plate 1* or its equivalent to connect a retainer such as H to the stopper. Preferably in the operation of striking up the plate F we form a lug I at its bottom and bend such lug dowmva'rdly at right angles to the lower flange of the plate, and so form the lug that it is capable of engage merit with'the retaining device. In the construction shown it is provided with a hole J adapted to receive the end of the retainer H. Obviously, however, the plate can be provided with other means for engaging the retainer.
The retainer H is shown as comprising a chain having at its end a wire ring K which is of such diameter as to prevent its passing throughthe seat Cwithout distortion. We prefer to provide the retainer at its upper end Witha split ring L which is formed as a key ring. By this means the retainer may be attached to the stopper or detached therefrom by hand. This'construction also enables the retainer to be conveniently made and sold as a separate article of manufacture since it can be applied to the stopper by any ordinary person Without the use of a tool. In the construction shown the ring K is of sufficient elasticity to permit it being forced through the seat of the stopper, while it possesses sufficient rigidity to prevent it escaping therefrom under the ordinary conditions of use. Any other form of retainer which is suitable for the purpose may, how ever, be used.
While we have shown in detail'oneform of our invention, it will be understood that various changesmay be made therein with-. out departing from theinvention. For instance, the plate F need-notbe in the form illustrated, and it may be attached to the stopperin other ways than that shown.
We do not herein claim the construction of retaining device shown. Devices of this type are (set forth in applications Nos. 181,253, filed Nov. 3, 1903, and 318,742, filed May 25, 1906.
What we claim is 1. In a water bottle stopper or the like. a packing washer, a plate adaptedto hold such washer in place, such plate being permanently connected to the stopper body by a part which is formed separately from such plate, and a retainer connected with such plate.

In a water bottle stopper or the like, a packing washer, a plate adapted to hold such washer in place. such plate being permanently connected to the stopper body by a part which is formed separately from such plate, such plate having a lug struck up from its body, and a retainer connected to such lug.
5. The combination of a stopper having an integral projecting portion at its bottom, an annular plate surrounding such projecting portion and connected to the stopper body thereby, a packing washer between said plate and said stopper body, a perforated lug struck up from the body of said plate, and a retainer connected to said lug.
6. The combination of a stopper having an integral projecting portion at its bottom, a separately formed plate connected to the stopper body by such portion, a packing washer between said plate and body and a retainer connected to such plate.
7. The combination of a stopper having an integral hollow projecting portion struck from its bottom, a separately formed plate connected to the stopper body by such portion. a packing washer between said plate and body and a retainer connected to such plate.
