Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 14,1905. Serial No. 282,832.
To colt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ESSE TURNER BRILL- HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottles, and aims to provide a bottle of such class in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby after the bottle has been used it cannot be used a second time for the same purpose or in a similar manner.
The invention further aims to provide a bottle in a manner and for the purpose hereinafter set forth which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail ref erence is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle in accordance with this invention, the bottle being unsealed. Fig. 2 is a like View with the bottle sealed; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation with the outer neck portion re-- moved, showing the bottle in position so the contents thereof can be removed.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes the body portion of the bottle, which has the top thereof terminating in an upwardly-extending neck 2, enlarged at its upper end, as at 3, so as to form a seat 4 for the stopper 5, the latter being of any suitable material. The neck 2 is termed the inner stationary neck portion, and the stopper 5 is termed the inner closure member.
Formed integral with the top of the body portion 1 is an upwardly-extending neck 6, which is termed the outer removable neck portion and at its lower end is connected in such a manner to the top of the body portion 1' that it can be very easily broken off and access be had to the stopper 5, so that the latter can be removed and the contents of'the bottle poured out. Preferably the lower end of the neck 6, which joins the body portion 1, is perforated, and by such an arrangement it is evident that the neck 6 can be very readily broken off by gently tapping thereon. Any other suitable manner of connecting the neck 6 with the body portion 1 can be employed. The neck 6 surrounds the neck 3 and extends a suitable distance above and over said neck 2. To obtain such an arrangement of the necks with respect to each other, the lower portion of the neck 6 is conical'in contour and terminates at its top into a cylindrical portion 7, the latter having an annular'fl'ange 8 depending from its lower end and furthermore provided with a cylindrical passage 9 to receive the intermediate locking-stopper 10 and the stopper 11, the latter being termed the outer closure member.
The locking-stopper 10 is. adapted to retain in position the inner closure member 5, and to obtain this function said stopper 10 is formed with a depending protuberance 12, which when the said stopper 10 is moved to operative position engages the inner closure member 5 and retains the latter in position Within the seat. To prevent the removal of the locking-stopper 10, the latter is formed with an annular groove 13, in which is mounted a resilient ring 14, said ring 14 when. the stopper 10 is forced through the passage 9 being adapted to spring out to a position below the annular flange 8, as shown in. Fig. 2. The locking-stopper 10 may be of any suitable material, as well as the outer closure member 11.
After the locking-stopper 10 has been moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the neck 6 sealed through the medium of the outer closure member 11 access can only be had to the contents of the bottle by breaking off the neck 6. By such an arrangement the stopper 10 can be moved out of contact with the inner closure member 5. The latter can then be removed, and the contents of the bottle poured out.
In practice the body portion 1 is entirely free from any stamps, markings, or labels whatsoever. The name of the manufacturer and contents of the bottle are stamped,
blown, or otherwise fixed to the removable or outer portion 6. Therefore it will be evident IIO that when the neck portion 6 has been removed and as the same cannot be replaced there will be nothing upon the body portion which will indicate the contents thereof or the name of the manufacturer. Consequently a consumer would not purchase the bottle unless some indications pointed to the contents of the bottle, and such indications can only be had when the outer neck portion 6 forms an integral part of the body portion, for the reason that it is upon this outer neck portion 6 which is placed the indications to designate the contents of the bottle and also the name of the manufacturer. By such an arrangement a further safeguard to prevent the fraudulent use of the bottle is obtained.
The intermediate or locking stopper can be constructed of glass or any other suitable material, and it will be evident that the outer neck portion can be manufactured and connected to any sized or shaped bottle which would set up a bottle in accordance with this invention. In this instance the height of the outer neck portion would be such as to associate properly with the height of the inner neck portion. I
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A' bottle comprising a body portion, an inner stationary neck portion formed integral therewith, an outer removable neck portion detachably connected with the body portion and surrounding and extending above said inner stationary neck portion, an inner closure member mounted in said inner stationary neck portion, a locking-stopper carried by the outer removable neck portion and adapted when moved to locking position to engage said outer neck portion and said inner closure member for retaining the latter in position, and an outer closure member for said outer neck portion.
2. A bottle comprising an inner and an outer neck portion, said outer portion being detachable and said inner portion being stationary, said outer neck portion provided with an annular flange, an inner closure member for said inner neck portion, a locking means arranged in said outer neck portion, engaging said flange and said member for re taining the latter in position, and an outer closure member for said outer neck portion.
3. Ina bottle, the combination with a body portion having aremovable neck portion, a stationary neck portion, and a closure means for the stationary neck portion, of a locking device arranged in said removable neck portion and comprising a body portion carrying a resilient ring, and further provided with a protuberance, said device when moved to operative position adapted to have said ring engage said outer neck portion for retaining the device in position and said protuberance engaging said closure means for retaining the latter in position.
4. In a bottle, the combination With a body portion having a removable neck por tion, a stationary neck portion, and a closure means for the stationary neck portion, of a locking device arranged in said removable neck portion and comprising a body portion carrying a resilient ring and further provided with a protuberance, said device when moved to operative position adapted to have said ring engage said outer neck portion for retaining the device in position and said protuberance engaging said closure means for retaining the latter in position, combined with an outer closure member for said outer neck portion.
5. In a bottle, the combination with a body portion, an outer neck portion detachably connected therewith, an inner neck portion formed integral with said body portion and extending up within the outer neck portion, a closure for said inner neck portion, and an element carried by the outer neck portion and provided with a resilient means adapted when said element is shifted in one direction to engage said outer neck portion to retain said closure and lock said element in position.
6. A bottle comprising a body portion having an upwardly-extending neck portion, an inclosing means surrounding said neck portion and detachably connected with said body portion, a closure means for said neck portion, and an element carried by said inclosing means and provided with a resilient device adapted when said element is shifted in one direction to engage said inclosing means and retain said closure and lock said element in position.
7. A bottle comprising a body portion having its top formed with an upwardly-extending neck portion provided with a seat, a closure means for the neck arranged in said seat, an outer neck portion surrounding the first- .mentioned neck portion and detachabl y connected with said body portion, means carried by said outer neck portion for retaining said closure means in position, and an outer closure member for said outer neck portion.
