Description

un in eooeo $220M UNITED srnmn onnron THOMAS W. MILLER, OIWARRON, 01110, ARSlGNOR TO THE FAULTLESS RUBBER COMPANY, OF ASHLAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
NIPPLE No oaeetnr Application filed December 21, 1506.
pancl under compression, thereby presenting 1 a Wider surface to the mouth of the infant and thus offering a greater obstacle to the undue insertion of the nipple into the mouth of the infant and consequent choking.
- A further object of my improved eonstructionisto prevent any contraction of the opere ing fro the body portion into the mouth piece of the nipple'under compression of the same.
These objects I accomplish in the manner and the means hereii'iafter described and claimed, reference, being had to the accompanyirfg drawing,;"in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a nursing bolt in with'my im rovod nipple in position thereon, the latter being shown partly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper end of the bottle and nipple, turned. to the position of use, the nipple being shown in its extended position. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig; 2, the nipple being shown in its compressed position. Fig. 4 is a view '3"; side elcvatiim of the nipple.
Siinilar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In-the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the conventional nursing bottle, over the flanged mouth 2 of which sprung the flanged neck 3 of the nipple. Said nipple intermediate the neek'fi and the mouth piece .1 d is proyided with a flaring body pijsrtion .5 of greater n ameter than theneek 5;, which, when the nipple is in position on the usual nursing bottle mouth, is of greater interrrd diameter than said bottle mouth, leaving an intermediate space, as shown in Fig. l.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22 1909.
Serial No. 348,958.
From this construction it will be seen that, when the nipple is drawn on by the infant, it will assume the position shown in Fig. 2, its llaring body portion 5 permitting an elongation of the some, as well as a certain amount of resiliency, that will minimize the danger of the nipple being detached from the bottle neck. And, when the nipple is compressed, its llaring body portion 5 will expand to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus oll'ering a wider obstacle to the mouth of the infant, and tending to prevent the further insertion of the mouth piece 4 into its mouth and consequent choking. i
it will be observed that the interior surface of the neck 3 of the nipple is smooth or unbroken, that is to say, unflanged, which faeilis tates the cleansing of the same after use, and which does not lessen its grip on the bottle, the llaring body portion 5 providing an interior gripping shoulder receiving and retaining the (longed neck of the bottle. Furthermore, should my improved nipple be employed with a nursing bottle whose flanged month 2 is large enough in diameter to fill lire flaring body portion 5 of the nip In without leaving any intermediate space, it will be understood that the substantially flat and eomparatively wide upper wall of said body portion will still yield evenly under compression, whereby any contraction or choking of the opening therefrom into the mouth piece =2 will be prevented,
l i aving thus described my invention, what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ,A nursing nipple, embodying a mouth piece, a neck, and an intermediate bodyportion liaring from said neck to receive the bend of the bottle neck, the upper wall of said body portion projecting imvordly at an acute angle from its point of greatest width to form a subslzu'ilially llat wall, the diameter of the opening from saidbody portion into the mouth pieee being relatively small in comparison.ilh the diameter of said body portion.
2. A nursing nipple, embodying a mouth piece, a bottle engaging neck, and an intermediate body portion abruptly flaring both from said neck and from said mouth piece my hand in the presence of two subscribing and forming" a}? agbrupt angle at the pointlof witnesses. reatest Widt 0 the hi e, said an uer n r 1 iertion when the nipple is engaged u itii'it 'lHOMAS MILLIA" nettle neck lying opposite to but away from Witnesses: contact with the head on said bottle neck. I. LEROY MILLER,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set F. E. GREENE.
