PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WINKLER, OF MOKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 763,236, dated June 21, 1904. Application filed Deeember 7, 1903. Serial No. 184,085. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WINKLER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hose-couplers; and the primary object of the invention is to provide a coupler in which the members may be easily and quickly connected and as easily and as quickly disconnected when desired.
Briefly described, the invention comprises a male and a female coupling member, the female member having an interior annular seat and provided on opposite sides with exterior bayonet-shaped recesses. The male member has a slitted nipple extension which is adapted to be sprung into position in the seat in the end of the female section or member and is also provided with bayonet-shaped lugs that are adapted to engage in the bayonet-shaped recesses in the exterior of the female member and lock the two sections together.
The above construction as outlined briefly will be hereinafter described in detail and then specifically claimed, and in describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and wherein like numerals of reference will be employed for indicating like parts throughout the different views of the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is an end view, of the female member of the coupling.
To construct a coupling in accordance with my invention, 1 provide a female member 1 and a male member 2, each of which may be provided with the exterior corrugations adjacent their outer ends to receive the hose. The female member is provided in its engaging end with an interior annular seat 3, which .increases the bore in the female member at the engaging end of the latter. This seat 3 adjacent its ends has beveled walls 4, the forming of the seat producing a shoulder 5, against which the extension carried by the male member is adapted to abut when the members are in coupled position. On opposite sides of its exterior the female member is provided with recesses 6 of L-shape or bayonet-shape form, the wide leg or portion of these recesses extending longitudinally of the member and the shorter leg or portion 7 being somewhat wider at its registry with the main portion of the recess than at its closed end, this leg or portion 7 of the recess extending transversely of the member.
The male member 2 of the coupling carries a nipple extension 8, provided with slits 9, extending from its outer or free end to a point adjacent its integral end, whereby to impart suflicient spring to the nipple to permit of its being compressed and forced into the socket or seat 3, provided therefor in the engaging end of the female section. This nipple extension 8 has its central portion bulged outwardly, whereby its ends constitute beveled seats 10, adapted to fit neatly with the beveled seats 4 4 of the female section when the members are in the coupled position, as seen in Fig. 2. The male member is provided on its exterior opposite sides with L shaped or bayonetshaped lugs, the longer legs 11 of which lie in the recesses 6 and the tapered legs 12 of which engage in the recesses 7. It is to be noted that the open ends of the portions or legs 6 of the recesses are of a width sufficient to receive the free ends of the L-shaped lugs therein, and after the nipple extension has been forced into its seat or socket the one member or the other is given a partial revolution, so as to move legs 12 into recesses 7 and lock the members in engaged position.
It is to be observed that the coupling is easily and quickly effected and an absolutely tight joint is made without the use of threads on the members.
While 1 have herein shown and described in detail a practical embodiment of my invention, yet it will be observed in the practice of the same that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hose-coupling the combination of two members, one member being formed with a bayonet-slot cut out of its peripheral surface and being also formed with an internal recess constituting an enlargement of its bore, said recess extending to the end of the member and having inwardly-inclined ends, the other member being formed with an integral lug adapt- JOHN WINKLER;
