To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT C. J OINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sweetgrass, in the county of Teton and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Scratching Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

-This invention relates to tobacco pipes provided with means for igniting a match and has for its object to provide a tobacco pipe having an improved attachment upon which matches may be scratched and the pipe readily and conveniently lighted.

A further object of this invention is to provide an attachment for a pipe which can be used for scratching and igniting matches but which in addition to strengthening or bracing the pipe may be readily placed on the pipe and detached.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the aforesaid kind which may be readily applied and secured to pipes of different sizes.

WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev-' 'eral vlews, Flgure 1 1s a view of a pipe provided with match scratching attachments constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a match scratching attachment constructed in accordance with this invention and adapted to be detachably secured to the top of the bowl of a pipe. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a match scratching attachment adapted to be detachably secured to the bowl of a pipe. Fig. 4 is a cross section through the ferrule on the stem.

In carrying out this invention I provide a tobacco pipe having a' bowl 1, stem 2, and detachable mouthpiece 3, with a match scratching device consisting of a metal ferrule 4 which is split so that its ends may overlap and fit over the end of the stem 2, and has elongated strips or extensions 5 which extend along each side of the stem 2, and are detachably secured thereto, by means of a pin or barb 6 formed at the end of each strip 5, which may be pushed into the wood of the stem 2. The ferrule 4 is provided with barbs or pins 7, which may be pressed into the wood of the stem to hold the ferrule in place. tached from the stem 2 by pulling it off therefrom. The strips 5 serve to hold the ferrule in place as well as to brace the stem 2. The strips 5 are each provided with a serrated or roughened surface 8 upon which a match may be ignited and the ferrule 4 is provided with a serrated or roughened surface 9 for the same purpose.

In order that the ferrule 4 may be attached to pipes of difierent sizes it is formed with overlapping extensions 10, and 11, the extensions 10 being provided with a barb 12, which is adapted, with the ends of the ferrule overlapping each other, to engage in the stem through any one of anumber of slits or openings 13 in the extension 11, or to be bent over and secured in the opening, thereby adapting the ferrule 4 to be adjustably fitted and secured to pipes of different sizes.

In Fig. 2 is shown a modified form of ferrule which consists of a metal ring 14 having a depending flange 15, the ferrule being adapted to fit over the rim of the bowl of a pipe and to be detached therefrom. The flange 15 is provided with a serrated or roughened surface 16 upon which matches may bescratched and ignited. In order that the ferrule 14 may be detachably secured to pipe bowls of different sizes, the flange 15 is provided at one end with a number of openings 17, and at the other end with a barb 18 which, when the ends of the ferrule 14 overlap may be pushed through any one of the openings 17 and forced into the wood of the pipe to hold the ends of the ring together and hold the attachment to the pipe. By this means the ferrule 14 may be detachably secured to the bowl of any sized pipe. While the adjustable ends of the ferrule 14 serve to clamp the ferrule on the rim of the pipe bowl, in order to aid in securing it in place it is preferably provided with barbs 19 which are pressed into the wood of the bowl and are readily detached by pulling off the ferrule, when its. ends are unfastened.

In Flg. 3 1s shown another modified form The ferrule may be readily de-- of ferrule 20, adapted to fit over the rim and sides of the bowl of a pipe and consisting of a flanged ring 21, provided with a rougl'iened surface 22 for scratching and igniting matches and depending strips or extensions 23 connecting the ring 21 with a split ring 22. The flared ring 21 is adapted to fit over the rim of the bowl of a pipe, and the extensions or strips 23 to extend down the sides of the bowl of the pipe to the ring 22 girdling the bowl. One end 24: of the ring 22 is provided with an opening 25, and the other end 26 with a tab or tongue 27 which may be pushed through the opening 25, and forced into the wood, thereby detachably clamping the ferrule 20 to the bowl of a tobacco pipe. A ferrule of this construction serves to brace the bowl of a pipe and prevent it from cracking.

By means of this invention a match scratching attachment for tobacco pipes is provided which may readily be attachably secured to a tobacco pipe of any size.

And having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a split ferrule stamped from sheet material and L-shaped in cross section, all

portions of one of the sides of the ferrule I extending in a common plane and adapted for engagement against an end portion of the pipe or the like, the remaining portion being adapted for encircling engagement with adjacent portions of the pipe and being provided with a plurality of integrally formed barbs arranged for piercing engagement with the material of a pipe, one of the ends of the ferrule being provided with a series of openings, and the other end being provided with a projection arranged for engagement through any of said openings for adjustment of the ferrule upon pipes of various sizes.

2. A device of the class described stamped integrally from sheet material and comprising an upper split ferrule portion comprising a shoulder flange, and an integral encircling portion extending therefrom for engagement with a pipe as described, and an integral laterally extending portion carried thereby and adapted for engagement intermediately of a pipe, as described.
