Description

intrd States @stwt @time FREDERICK CATLIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Leners Patent No. 95,424, camz october 5,1869.
-H IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-PINS Fon SECURING CLOTHING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of the lame. l
being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pins. for fastening shawls and other articles of clothing, as well as jewelry, portemonnaies, pocketbooks and other articles of value, and consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts,
'as hereinaftermore, fully described.
In the accompanyingsheet of, drawings- Figure l represents a central longitudinal section of a pin, constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line :c as" of g. 1.
vliigure 3 is a detailed view, showing the stop-arrangement on the top'of' the pin.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the back of the pin, which is tubular, and near to the ends of which are the two studs B B', attached. The pin proper, O, is hinged to B, while the tube D is fastened to the other.
E is a slotted shanked knob, which works in D, and is fastened therein by the pin j, (seen in fig. 3,) by means of a transverse slot y, in the tube D. This slot allows the knob E to make about one-fourth of a revolution iu the tube D.
Both the tube D and the sha-nk E are slotted, to admit the pin O, as seen in figs. 2 and 3. In fig. 1, the pin is seen in place in the shank, as when in use.
Whenthe piu is thus fastened, the knob is prevented from turning vby the spring-lock h,fig.1,-which enters the collar'i. ofthe knob, as seen at j, and holds it rigidly in place. y l
To loosen the pin C, the bolt h is pressed back when the knob is turned., so that the pin j, in the shank E, strikes one extremity of the slot g, when the two slots in the knob and the tube stand as seen in iig. 3. The pin-is then thrown up by the spring k,
which bears against the pin with a constant pressure. When the piu in the knob is turned to the other extremity of the s lot g, it is conned, and the bolt hv springs forward andlocks it fast.
The backAis tubular, andL is an independent pin, which is concealed. therein when not in use, as, seen in the drawing. This pin L screws into the cud of the back A, as seen at m, and is connected with the back by the Vchain n. It may be used for securing-anotherarticle of dress, or as'additional security for articles worn. or carried, either foruse or ornament.
O is a chain, which unites the spring-boltv h with theend of the knob .E.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl l l. The tubular back A, studs B B', spring le, springboit h, slotted tube D, slotted knob 'E, and pin G, combined and operating substantially as described, for
the purposes set forth.
2. In combination wit-h the above, the pin L, substantiail y as herein described, for the purpose specified. The above specication of my invention signed by me, this 17th day of March, 1869.
FREDERICK CATLIN.
