To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Anonrn L. BLAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gal:- land, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobaeco-Fipes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tobacco pipes and one object of the same is to provide means whereby the pipe bowl may be conveniently supported upon the pocket flap of a garment or in other convenient position for use.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bowl having supporting means as described with a long flexible stem having a mouth piece, the said stein serving, on account of its length to separate nieotin from the smoke and to cool the latter.

A still further object of the invention is to improve the fastening means whereby the bowl is supported in position for use.

Still further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the general construction and operation of this class of devices.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but that changes alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the practical use of the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the pipe bowl detached. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 4c is a perspective view illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional detail view taken on the plane indicated by the line 55 in Fig. 4.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The bowl 6 of the improved pipe may be of any desired size and general shape or contour, but I prefer that it be provided with a back wall '4' which is vertically straight but horizontally slightly convex or curved in an inward. direction so that it will lie conveniently in juxtaposition to the body of the user. A perforated flap 8 is hingedly connected adjacent to the upper edge of one of the side walls of the bowl and the free edge is adapted to be engaged by a spring or friction clasp 9 for the purpose of retaining the cover in closed position. The bowl is provided adjacent to its lower edge with a nipple 10 adapted to be connected with one end of a flexible stem 11 of rubber or other suitable material, the other end of said stem being provided with a mouth piece 12.

Suitably secured upon the back wall 6 of the bowl is a fastening device or supporting device consisting of an approximately U- shaped loop 15 having downwardly extending approximately vertical limbs 16 which are suitably secured upon the back wall of the bowl and which are provided at their lower extremities with outturned terminal prongs 17 that project in the direction of the loop 15 which latter is slightly spaced from the back wall by the bridge pieces 18 which connect the upper ends of the side members of the loop with the upper extremities of the limbs 16. it will readily be seen that the loop 15 may be inserted behind a garment flap such as that of a pocket 19 and that when thus inserted it will serve to support the bowl; the latter being held with additional security owing to the fact that the prongs 17 will be pressed by the weight of the bowl into engagement with the face of the fabric, thus retaining the bowl ver securely in such a manner that it may not be readily shaken loose or become detached by any movements or exercise on the part of the user.

In Figs. 1 and 5 has been illustrated a slight modification or elaboration of the invention which consists therein that the lid or cover 8 is provided adjacent to its rear edge with a dmvnward projected flange or lip 20 adapted to engage the loop 15 of the fastening device which is located in the path of said flange. In the use of this modification, to apply the pipe bowl to a garment flap, the lid 8 is first raised and the bowl is then. placed in position as heretofore described; by shutting the lid or cover, the flange 20 will engage the loop 15 and force the same slightly in the direction of the flap, thus compressing the flap 19 between the loop 15 and the limbs 16 with their outward projecting prongs, and thus causing the bowl to be held and retained with additional security.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed the operations and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.

The construction is very simple and inexpensive. A pipe bowl constructed as de scribed may be readily mounted upon a suitable support, such as a garment flap, the edge of a belt or the like or it may be supported upon the upper edge of a tobacco box or some similar receptacle placed upon the floor or upon a table when the luxury of a smoke in bed may be enjoyed by those who take pleasure therein without danger of igniting the bed clothing.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A pipe bowl having a slightly concaved back wall, and a supporting device co1nprising a U-shaped loop, limbs connected with said loop and secured upon the back wall, and outturned prongs at the lower extremities of the limbs.

2. A pipe bowl having a slightly concaved back wall, a supporting device secured upon said back wall and including a loop slightly spaced from the wall, and prongs extending outwardly from the wall in the direction of the loop.

3. A pipe bowl, a fastening device secured upon the back wall of said bowl and including a loop slightly spaced from the wall, and a lid hingedly connected with the bowl and having a flange adapted to engage the loop.

l. A pipe bowl, a lid hingedly connected therewith and having a flange extending downwardly adjacent to the back wall of the bowl, and a supporting device secured upon the back wall and including a loop slightly spaced from the back wall and lying in the path of the flange of the lid, and prongs extending from the back wall in the direction of the lid.

5. A pipe bowl, a supporting device for said bowl including a flap-engaging loop, and a lid hingedly connected with the bowl and having loop-engaging means whereby said loop will be forced in the direction of the back wall to grip and clamp material inserted between said walls and the loop.
