IMPRovEMENT 1N Minn-CAN.'
The Schedule referred/Ifo 1n thes'L'ett'xs Patent and making part f the same.
To a-ll lwhom it may conce-rn:
Be it known that I, JonN COCHRAN, of Purdys Station, in the county of Westchester, and State of- New York, have invented a new and improved Milk- Gan; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same reference being had to the accompanying dra-wing, orming part of this specication, in which diawlng- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of this invention.
Figure 2 is apartial side elevation ofthe saure.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section ofthe same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of an external ring, secured to the body of the can, above the bottom, in combination with an internal ring below the bottom, iu such a manner that by thesaid external ring a firm and durable support is obtained' for the internal ring, which forms the foot ofthe can, and also abrace for its bottom. l In the drawing, the letterAdesignates the body of a milk-can, which ismade in a cylindrical form, by turning a piece of sheet metal to the required shape.
The seam of this body is produced vby providing its. edges with hook-shaped flanges a, (see fig. 3,) and slipping over these flanges a sleeveb, which firmly retains the ends, and produces a strongand durable seam.
The neck B' of my can is ogee-shaped, and itslower edge is made to form a bead, b, which ts into a cavity aff-formed at or near the top edge of the body A.
By reason of its peculiar shape, the neck preserves a certain elasticity which materially ini-proves its durability, and the head b' can be readily sprung into y the cavity a', so that a `strongr and durable joint can 'be produced with little trouble and expense.
Totbe lower end of the body A, close above the b'ody',A is 'securedan external ring, C, which is fast- 'ened to said body by n'vets c, as shown in g. 1', and
to this ring'is. secured the internal ring D, which is made of hoopiron','and formsthe foot of the can, and' n also as a brace, supporting and strengthening the bottom B. y
The joint d, of the external .ring C, is dovetailed,
` as shown in'fig..2,' so that thel same is rendered strong and durable. i v
Having thus described my invention, Whatl claim as new, and desire to secure byA Letters Patent, is The bottoniv of the can, having itsedge extended between the lower edge of the body A and the top of the external ring C, in 'connection with the internal .ring D, secured to said external ring, and supporting the bottom, substantially as described.
This specification signed by me, this 10th' day of July, 18.69. vJOHN COCHRAN.- Witnesses:
W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
