Description

S. P. ETTER.
SPRING MATTRESS. I APBLIOATION FILED JULY 1e. 1909.
SAMUEL'P'. ETTEB, 0F CSME, ILLINOIS'.
STRING-MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Application led July 16, 190B. Seria! No. 508,05a.
' To all 'whom 'it may concern: i
Be it known that LSAMUEL P. Erminia citizen of the United States, residing at Cisne, inthe county of Wayne and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tospring mattresses and one object of the invention is to provide an economical, light and durable article in which the qualitiesof a spring anda mattress shall be combined so that the device when placed in position upon a bed willl ailord a support for the body of the occupant without the use of additional'supportmg means. v
A further objeet ci' the invention is to combine wire springs of suitable construction with a mattress body formed of telt,
said wire springs being embedded in the felt structure of the mattress.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
With these and other ends in View which .will readily appear as the nature of the invention isl better understood the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafterfully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the drawing hereto annexed has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details'therein exhibited but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
in the drawing: Figure l is a plan view K of a spring mattress constructed in' accord- -frame A supports the spring body B whichj may be constructed in anysuitable manner of woven wire; in the example illustrated in y the drawing of the spring body is formed of crimped wires 6, suitably interwoven to form meshes of any desired dimensions and having their terminal -endssuitably attached to the side and end members of the frame A.
The mattressbody C is formed oflayers of felt completely surrounding the spring.
frame A .which latter is completely4 em- -heddedbetween the layers of felt, the comonent material of which is agglutinated etween the meshes of the 'wire fabric so as Patented Mar. S, i910.
to form practically a single thickness of v felt. 'lhe mattress may be of any desired thiclmess but it is estimated that a thickness or two inches will be sucient for all ractical urposes. The manner of supp ying the liegt cover to the springV frame may be varied; the hair, woollor other material or materials oi? which the felt is composed may be applied directly to the sides of the frame and subjected tothe ordinary well known process,.or sheets of felt may be applied to the sides ot thel frame and subby the material will become agglutinated between the meshes of the wire.
jected to a subsequent fulling-process where- From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annened the operation and advantages of this invent-ion will be readily understood. A spring mattress constructed. according to this invention will be light in weight and it maythereitore be easily turned and handled by a person ot the weaker sex; it is clean and sanitary as well as thoroughly comfortable in use; and by theuseof the improved spring mattress independent supporting springs may be entirely dispensed with thereby etecting a saving ofno small impertence. A
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed isil. As an article of manufacture, a Inattress of solid felt in combination with a trame embedded in the felt and a woven spring supported by said frame.
2. A spring mattress comprising a rigid ame, a woven spring supported thereby.
the `ame and spring.
3. A spring mattress comprising a rigid. frame, a woven s ring supported thereby,
and a covering of elt, the material of which vand a covering of felt completely inclosing' l Q 95eme@ is aggtiated betvseeh' the meshes of thel l the` mterigil of the felt being agglutnated spring. .between the meshes of the s ring. 10 JA compmsing Ya, rigid frame, In testimon whereof I a my signature a woven spl'ipg supported thereby and comin presence o twowitnesses.
