Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented. May '7, 1907.
Application Iiled December 4,1006. Serial Nm 346.206y
To all whom it muy concern.-
Be it known that I, EnwAsoJ. Dnrnizvc,
a citizen ofthe United States, and residing at New York, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, oi which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to beds, couches, and the like; and the object thereof is to provide an improved mattress frame for articles of this class or to provide a frame for articles of this class having improved spring supports i5 for a mattress.
The invention is Vfully disclosed in the .Following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by zo suitable reference characters in each ol the views, and in which 5* Figure l is a perspective view ol' a bed prov :ided with my improvement; Fig. 2 a plan -view of a bed frame provided with my improvement and with the upright end meiners omitted, Fig, 3 a transverse section onA the line 3-3 of Fig, 2 ,1 Fig. Li a plan view of a buckle device which I employ; and, Fig. 5 a
bottom plan view of a hook which I also em- 3o ploy.
In the drawing forming part of this speciication, I have shown at a a bed or mattress frame comprising parallel end members o2 and parallel side bars or members o3.
In the form of construction shown, the bed or mattress trame is provided with upright end members a4, but it will be understood that the said end members are not necessary in the construction of a couch or lounge, and 4o may or may not be employed in the construction oi a bed, all that is necessary in either event is to provide suitable legs or supports for the bed or mattress frame, and in the forni of construction shown, the upright members at l'orm such` legs or supports.
In the practice ol" my invention, the parallel 'side bars or members of are composed oll scparat-c telescopic or longitudinally adjustable parts, one ol which slides within thc other as 5o clearly'shown in Fig. 3, one ol' said parts is provided with equally spaced holes and the other with one or morecorrespoiiding holes o, and the separate parts are coiniected by bolts or similar devices o7 adapted to be passed through said holes.
l In the form oli construction shown, the ,separate parts ol the parallel side bars or members c3 oi the bed or mattress frame are composed oi angle-iron as shown in Fig. 3, and this is the l'orm olf construction which I prefer, the parallel end members a2 of the bed or mattress trame being also composed ot similar material, in order to facilitate the connection therewith of the spring members of the bed or mattress traine as hereinafter described.
The spring members or supports o'l the bed or mattress frame consist olf llexiblc straps b preferably of textile material, and said nicmbers are extended, in the l'orm ol' construction shown, longitudii'ially of the bed or mat tress frame and are connected with the end members a, thereoi' at one end by spiral springs c and at the opposite end by means oll straps (l having buckle attachments d and hook attachments d3.
The springs c are provided with hooks which are passed tl'irough holes c in c-ne of the end members o2 of the bed er mattress framer and the corresponding ends ol' the strap devices I) are provided with link ineinbersfwith which said springs are connected- The opposite ends of the strap members are connected with the buckles dv3 in the usual or any desired manner, and the hook members d are connected with the corresponding end bars or members o? of the bed or mattress frame by being passed through holes y formed therein.
By means of the buckle and strap devices f/ the lengths ol the llexible straps t may be regulated, as will be understood, and by means olE the telescopic construct ion ol' rh side bars or members fri ol the bwl or mai` tress frame, the said bod or mattress trame, or the length thereol' mayY also be adjusted, and in: this way, l provide a bed or mattress frainc the length ol' which may be adjusted, desired, and said bod or mattress l'rame Hiay thus be made 1o .suit any possible requirements as to length.
ln the drawing forming part olI this specilication, l. have shown the spring straps or devices b as running longitinlinally ol' thc bed or mattress l'i'anie only, but it will be understood that similar devices may be placed will not be necessary for the last named spring straps or devices to be adjustable as to length. Having fully described my invention, I
IOC,
' transversely to said frame ilI desired, but it claim as new and desire to secure by Letters through which the mainstraps are passed Patent, is 4 A bed or mattress frame, the side bars of y which are composed of separate parts where- 'f by the length thereof may be adjusted longitudinally, said frame bein also provided with longitudinally arrange main straps for supporting a mattress, said main straps being connected with one end of the frame by ymeans of spiral springs and .with the other end of the frame by means of supplemental straps provided at one end with buckles;
gave said end of the frame.
n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing 'Witnesses this 1st day of December 1 906.
