L. J. F. NIGOLAI INSTRUMENT FOR ADMINISTERING POWDER AND OTHERSUBSTANGES. APPLICATION FILED MAY 25, 1907.

LUDWIG JOHANN FRIEDRICH NICOLAI,
PHATEGO GERMANY.
GESELLSCHAFT MIT BESCHRANKTER HAFTUNG,
OF DRESDEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO OF DRESDEN,
INSTRUMENT FOR ADMINISTERING POWDER AND OTHER SUBSTANCES.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG JOIIANN FRIEDRICH NICOLAI, a subject of the free and hanseatic town of Hamburg, Germany, residing at Dresden, Saxony, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Instruments for Administering Powder and other Substances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for receiving powder or other substances and introducing them into the nose or other parts of the body. The device comprises a tube which is dipped with its open end into the powder and which holds the substance taken up by self-adhesion, and a core adjustable in the same, which determines by its position in the tube the amount of powder to be received. The core itself can also be constituted by a tube open at both ends, in which case air for the introduction of the powder into the cavity of the body is drawn or blown in through the tube. If, however, the core be solid, the outer tube must be provided with one or more inlet openings. Finally it is advisable to make the mouth of the outer tube slightly reduced, for the purpose of preventing the inner tube from coming out, and also for better retaining in the tube the substance taken up.
Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing show a construction in which the core itself consists of a tube open at both ends. Fig. 3 is a modification.
At the back end of the outer tube a, is secured a sleeve Z) (Fig. 2), or handle 7' (Fig. 1). This sleeve or handle serves for guiding the second tube 0 which is ndjustably mounted in the tube a. The mouth (Z of the outer tube is slightly reduced. This construction of the device is chiefly intended for introducing powder-like bodies, such as catarrh powders, into the nasal passages above the root of the nose without producing an injurious forcing of the powder through the etlnnoid bone, and for insuring uniform distribution in the natural air passages. To that end, the. inner tube set in such manner that a space 0 is produced which can take up exactly the desired dose of the powder. The device is then intro ducedwith the mouth downward into the powder, whereupon the space 6 is filled with the powder, which is retained therein by co- Specification of Letters Patent.

hesion. After the device has been turned over, that is to say with the mouth upward, it is introduced into the nostril and pushed as :tar as possible to the root of the nose. Then the contents are discharged by draw ing in air, with the mouth closed, whereby air is drawn in through the inner tube 0. The powder thus escaping from the space follows the natural air passages, and thus cannot miss its object. There is no possibility of the highly dangerous forcing of the powder through the etlnnoid bone, owing to an excessively strong introduction of the powder, as is the case, for instance, when using com pressed-air atomizers.
By arranging on the outer tube a scale and on the inner tube a mark or vice-versa, the dose to be taken up can be easily determined. For such cases in which it is desired to introduce the powder by means of compressed air, the end of the inner tube can be simply connected to a pipe with a pressure ball. The socket b can also be made into the end of a handle (Fig. 1.)
A mmlilied construction is shown in Fig. 3. In this case the core which is adjustable in the outer tube a, is made solid and does not closely fitthe outer tube. The supply of air is obtained in this case by providing the sleeve 1) with one or more airinlets y. The air then passes up around the solid core (1 which is guided in the sleeve Z). ()t course, in this case a flexible pipe with pressure ball could also be employed.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- An instrument for administering powder or similar substances consisting of a hollow tube open at both ends, in the upper end of which a definite amount of powder may be taken up and retained, of a hollow core, open at both ends, adjustable within the tube, whereby ditlerent amounts of powder may be carried in the tube, and through which core air may be drawn or forced to discharge the powder from the tube and a guide carried by the tube for guiding the core.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUDWIG JOIIANN FRIEDRICH NICOLAI.
