Abstract

8662. Kancke, E. April 16. Spirometers; inhalers.-A transparent cylinder a contains a free piston d filled with material impregnated with a medicament and covered by a perforated top e. From the cap i of the cylinder extends a tube s fitted with a mouthpiece. The cap is movable on the cylinder and forms with it a tubular valve to admit more or less. air above the .piston. When the mouthpiece is inserted in the mouth and a deep inspiration is taken, the piston d is drawn up the cylinder a, which is graduated to show the capacity of the lungs. When air is admitted above the piston, a greater effort is necessary to raise it ; the valve action of the cap can thus be made a gauge for exercising the lungs.
