EDWARD DANIEL EAST, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
INHALER.
Application filed September 19, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD D. BAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to inhalers for treating nasal, throat and lung diseases, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of inhaler by which the air admitted to the interior of the receptacle containing the drug is impregnated with a drug prior to entering the receptacle and the impregnated air is again mixed with another drug contained within the receptacle, the primary impregnation of the air being brought about by forcing the air prior to entering the receptacle to pass through a drug contained in the air tube.
My invention furthermore, consists in the provision of a draft tube having two outlets, one of which is adapted to be used for treating throat diseases through the month, while the other outlet is adapted to be used for treating nasal and lung diseases through the nose.
My-invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my improved inhaler; and Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view thereof.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts in both views.
My improved inhaler comprises a suitable receptacle 1 shown in the drawings of a bottle shape and having its neck opening closed with a stopper 2 of any suitable material such as rubber. The stopper 2 is provided with two openings 3 and 4 in which are mounted the draft tube 5 and the air supply tube 6 respectively. The receptacle 1 is adapted to contain any suitable drug indicated at 7 for treating diseases by inhalation and the draft tube 5 is inserted in the receptacle 1 so that its lower end does not enter said drug 7 The outer portion of the draft tube 5 is provided withtwo outlets Specification of Letters Patent.

designated 8 and 9 respectively that may be closed by means of stoppers 10 and 11 engaging fiexible sleeves 12 and 13 on the extremities of said outlet. The outlet 8 is adapted to be used for treating throat diseases and is designed to be inserted in the mouth of the patient and when so used, the stopper 10 is removed therefrom, while the stopper 11 is retained in the sleeve 13 to close the outlet 9. The outlet 9 is'designed for the treatment of nasal and lung diseases and when so used, the stopper 11 is removed while the stopper 10 is inserted in the sleeve 12 to close the outlet 8.
The air supply tube 6 has the portion inserted through the opening 4 in the stopper 2 with its lower terminal extending into the drug 7, while the, tube outside of the receptacle l is formed with a horizontal portion 14, a downwardly extending portion 15 that is bent on itself as shown at 16 and formed with an upwardly extending portion 17 through which the air is admitted to the receptacle 1, the upper extremity of the upright portion 17 being adapted to be closed by a stopper 18 inserted in a flexible sleeve 19 mounted on the terminal of said upright portion 17. In using my improved inhaler, it may be found desirable to impregnate the air with a drug prior to entering the receptacle 1 and to accomplish this, I insert a drug indicated at 20 in the tube, said drug being contained within the bent portion 16.
The operation of my improved inhaler will be apparent from the above description and inspection'of the drawings, and a more detailed description of the operation is not deemed to be necessary.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is An inhaler including a vertical draft tube, an upwardly and laterally inclined draft tube connected at'its lower end to and communicating with the upper end of said draft tube, a horizontally disposed branch tube connected at its inner end to and communicating with the upper end of said draft tube, said tubes projecting from the draft mounted on and projecting beyond the free In testimony whereof I aflix my signature eigds 5f the branphltubes, stoppers i'emovin presence of two Witnesses.
& 1y tted in saic s eeves, and abutting the free ends of said branch. tubes,'said project EDWARD DANIEL EAST ing portions of said sleeves forming flexible \Vitnesses:
nozzles, and means for securing the stoppers FRANK READ,
