UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. YATES, OF SHARON, WISOON SIN.
NASAL I-N HALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,793, dated January 20, 1880.
Application filed October 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. YATES, of Sharon, in the county of Walworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and 1mproved Nasal Inhaler, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved nasal inhaler which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and
which shall be so arranged that the air can circulate very freely in the same before being inhaled.
The invention is an improvement on theinhaler for which Letters Patent No. 167,209 were granted to-myself and Charles R. Treat, dated August 31, 1875; and it consists of a fluted tube containing a packing medicated ble material, provided with several flutings, B
B, and contracted at its upper end, and forming the aperture 0.
A number of tubes, D D, made of paper or some other suitable material and medicated with my improved inhalent, and which form the packing, are inserted into the fluted tube A in the manner shown. There may be any desired number of these packing-tubes, according to the number of flutings in the tube A.
The tube A is contained in case E, of indiarubber, gutta-percha, celluloid, metal, or some other suitable material, and provlded with a cap, F.
The inhaler is used as follows: The cap F is removed, the aperture 0 is placed to the nostril, and the air in the tube A is inhaled. This will cause fresh air to enter into the space between the fluting and the case, as indicated by the arrow a, and descend to the bottom of the case, and then rise up through the packing-tubes D D and pass through the aperture G into the nostril, as indicated by the arrows b and c.
There are no shoulders or joints that could break in this inhaler. The cap F can be easily removed, and the air can circulate very freely, and thus absorb a sufficient quantity of the inlialent with which the packing-tubes D are medicated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An inhaler consisting of the rubber tube A, contracted at the upper end toward aperture G, and provided with flutings B,'to receive packing-tubes, as shown and described.
JOHN H. YATES.
