To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPHINE E. TERI-Innis, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Center, in the county of Clarke, State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashboard- Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to washboard clamps and more particularly to that class of clamps for securing a washboard to a washtub.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character in which a washboard may be readily and easily mounted against displacement in a washtub or other receptacle when it is desired to bring the said board into active use.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character which may be readily attached or firmly fixed to a tub or similar receptacle of varying sizes and to a washboard so that the latter may be held perfectly firm and still, permitting the operator to use both hands.

A further object' of the invention is the provision of a clamp for holding washboards within a tub which is simple in construction, strong, durable and of low cost to manufacture.

WVith these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention to enable those skilled in the art to carry the same into practice, and as brought out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings :Figure l is a sectional view of a tub with the invention applied thereto and also to a washboard positioned within the tub. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the washboard with the'clamp mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

In the drawings the numeral 5 designates generally a washtub which is of the usual and ordinary construction and within which upon its bottom rests at the proper inclination a washboard 6, vhich is also of the usual or ordinary construction, and has detachably secured at its rear face near the uppermost portion thereof by a fastener 7, a laterally projecting plate or board 8, which has its free end detachably connected by a fastener 9, to a depending ear 10, formed on a clamping device as will be hereinafter described.

The clamping device comprises a yoke member 11, having an angularly disposed fixed aw 12 at one end and a depending right angularly disposed extension 13, in alinement with the said fixed jaw. United to the jaw and said extension is a guide piece or member let, to which is slidably con nected a movable jaw 15, and between this jaw and the said fixed jaw is adapted to be clamped the side wall of the tub 5, to securely hold the washboard 6, in position in the tub and to prevent it from moving about in the latter so that the operator will have the use of both hands.

Threaded in the extension 13, is the shank 16, of a thumb screw member 17, and this stem is adapted to act upon the movable jaw 15, upon adjusting the thumb screw member so as to bring the said movable jaw toward or away from the fixed jaw when it is desired to apply the clamping device to various sized tubs or similar receptacles.

It will be obvious that the washboard 6, can be swung upwardly and outwardly from within the tub 5, when desired so that the latter may be utilized for other purposes than when used for washing or scrubbing the clothes without the necessity of removing the clamping device from the side of the tub.

From the foregoing the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly apparent without the necessity of a more extended explanation and thus the same has been omitted.

To swing the washboard out of the tub 5 it is necessary to loosen the fastener 9 then swing the plate 8 upward from substantially horizontal to vertical position and secure the same in this position which will hold the washboard elevated and outside of the tub so that the latter may be used for any purpose deemed desirable.

That is claimed is The combination with a washboard, of a clamp comprising a substantially inverted U-shaped yoke formed with a jaw at one extremity and an internally threaded sleeve at the opposite extremity, a guide strip spanning the yoke and integral therewith, a movable jaw slidably connected to the guide strip, an adjusting screw engaging the sleeve and acting upon the slidable jaw to move the same towardzand away from the first named jaw for securing the clamp to and detaching the same from the side of a washtub, a perforated ear depending centrally from the yoke, a board detaehably connected to the washboard at its head, and a thumb screw passed through the board and the perforated ear to adjustably secure the said board to the clamp.
