FLAT-IRON ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1911.
Application filed November 14, 1910. Serial No. 592,207.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL NEDBOR and FANNY NEDBOR,C1131Z6I1S of the United States, residing at Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Flat-Iron Attachments, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a seam-opening attachment capable of being applied to any fiatiron, and by means of which a seam may be opened and pressed.
We will first describe one embodiment of our invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flatiron having our attachment applied thereto, said view showing the manner in which the device is used; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line a2ac, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section through the nose of the iron on substantially the line y-2 Fig. 1.
In the drawings 3 designates a flatiron of any suitable or usual construction, and 4: is the handle thereof. Our novel seamopening attachment does not' form part of the fiatiron, but is constructed to be detachably applied to any fiatiron.
Our improvement comprises a seam-opening member 5 which is provided with a tapered or wedgeshaped nose 6 that is adapted to enter between the edges 7 of a seam and to turn the edges over, and which has the fiat smoothing face 8 arranged to partially press the edges 7 of the seam after they have been turned over. This seamopening member 5 is carried by the lower end of an arm 10 of a U-shaped member 9, the other arm 11 of which is adapted to be clamped to the handle 4: of the fiatiron. For this purpose, we have provided said arm 11 with the two clamping jaws 12 and 13 which are adapted to embrace the handle, and the jaw 13 has pivoted thereto a clamping screw 14, the end of the jaw 12 being slotted as at 15 to receive the clamping screw, said screw having a clamping nut 16 thereon by which the jaws are clamped firmly about the handle. The arm 11 is extended below the clamping aws and the extended end is bent or shaped to fit the nose or point of the fiatiron 3, as shown at 17, so that this portion 17 constitutes a positioning portion to assist in holding the supporting member 9 in proper position. WVhen the supporting member 9 is clamped to the handle, the portion 17 is held firmly against the pointed end of the flatiron and any lateral movement of the supporting member is thereby prevented.
The device is used as shown in Fig. 1, that is, it is placed on the seam so that the nose 6 will enter between the edges 7 there of, and as it is pushed along the seam, the edges 7 are spread by the nose 6 and receive a temporary pressing by the surface 8 and the seam receives its final pressing by means of the flatiron 3.
Our device may be readily applied to any ordinary fiatiron and the use of the device does not necessitate any special construction of fiatiron.
In order to permit the seam-opening attachment to be used or not depending on the use to which the flatiron is put, we have made the support 9 so that this attachment can be swung into and out of inoperative position. As herein shown, the arm 10 of the U-shaped support or member 9 is made in two parts which are held together by a clamping screw 20. The section 21 of the arm to which the seam-opening member 5 is secured is preferably made adjustable vertically so that the height of said member may be adjusted to suit the shape of the fiatiron. For this purpose the section 21 of the arm 10, to which the seam-opening member 5 is secured, is slotted as at 22, and the clamping screw 20 extends through said slot. The slotted portion of the section 21 is also provided with a serrated face 23 which engages the serrated face 24 of the other portion of the arm 10, these serrations operating to hold the section 21 firmly in its adjusted position. If for any reason the seamopening member is not needed the clamping screw 20 may be loosened and the arm section 21 may be swung into the dotted line position Fig. 1 and clamped there, When the parts are thus adjusted the iron may be used in the ordinary way, but if at any time the seam-opening attachment is v needed, it may be readily swung down into operative position.
Some of the advantages of this construction are that it is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and that it can be applied and adjusted to any fiatiron.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a flatiron, of a seam-opening attachment therefor comprising a two-part supporting member, means to clamp one part of said member to the flatiron handle, a seam-opening member sus tained by the other part, and means for adjustably connecting said parts.
2. The combination with a fiatiron, of a seam-opening attachment therefor comprising a two-part supporting member one part of which is vertically adjustable on the other part, means to clamp said other part of said member to the flatiron handle, a seam-opening member sustained by the vertically-adjustable part, and means connecting said parts which permits the seam-opening member to be swung into or out of operative position without disconnecting the supporting member from the flatiron.
3. The combination with a fiatiron, of a seam-opening attachment comprising a U- shaped two part supporting member one of said parts separable from the other, clamping jaws carried by one arm of said U-shaped supporting member and adapted to embrace the handle of the fiatiron, and a seam-opening member carried by the other arm of said supporting member.
4. A seam-opening attachment for flatirons comprising a supporting member having a vertically adjustable portion, means to clamp the supporting member to a flatiron handle, and a seam-opening member can ried by the adjustable portion.
5. A seam-opening attachment for fiatirons comprising a seam-opening member, a U-shaped support therefor having a vertically adjustable portion, a pair of clamping jaws secured to said U-shaped support and adapted to be clamped to the flatiron handle, said support being provided with a positioning portion 17 adapted to engage the point of the flatiron.
6. A seam-opening attachment for flatirons comprising a U-shaped supporting member, means to clamp said member to a flatiron handle, one arm of said member be ing provided with a positioning portion 17 to engage a flatiron, the other arm of said member being made in sections adjustable relative to each other, and a seam-opening member secured to the adjustable section.
7. A seam opening attachment for flat irons comprising a U-shaped supporting member, means to clamp one arm of said member to the handle of the fiatiron, the other arm of said U-shaped supporting member extending downwardly to a point substantially in the plane of the underside of the fiatiron and carrying a seam-opening member.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
