SHAFT-LINER.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented 1s, 1910.
Application filed. August 6, 1909. Serial No. 511,555. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS N. BROUILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shaft -'Liners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of de-' vices which are known as shaft liners and which are used for installing, truing and alining shafts; and it has for its objects to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices and to produce an implement which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability and general ei'iciency.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in ventionis better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however understood that no limitation is necessarily .made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a shaft to which the improved lining apparatus has been applied. in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the main targets. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same seen from the opposite side. Fig. 4 is a side view of the testing target. Fig. 5 is a side view of the latter as seen from the opposite side.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved apparatus includes twomain targets A er and an intermediate or testing target B. The main targets which are of identical construction each comprise a pair of clamping jaws 6 and 7 having curved or arcuate faces adapted to grip a shaft; said jaws being hingedly connected by means of a pin or bolt 8 extending through projections 9 upon the jaws. One of the jaws which for convenience will be described as the lower jaw 6 is provided with a laterally extending arm 10 having a recess "11 WlflQlGlll a nut 12 is loosely fitted to be engaged by a thumb screw 13 which operates through an aperture in a lag 1 1 extending laterally from the free end of the jaw 7 the parts being so proportioned that the meeting faces of the arm 10 and the lug 1 1 shall lie in the plane of the axis of the curved opposing faces of the jaws or of the shaft clamped between the jaws. Upon the under side -of the arm 10 is mounted a casing 15 containing a spirit level 16; and the arm 10' recessed to form a guide for a slid-able extension rule 17" which is held and guided for operation by a keeper 18 and by a clamping bolt 19 extending through a longitudinal slot 20 in the arm 10.
The intermediate or testing target comprises an arm 10 which is recessed to afford a bearingfor a slidable extension rule 17" held and guided for operation by a keeper 18 and a clamping screw 19; secured upon theunderside of the arm 10 is a casing 15 containinga spirit level 16. One end of the arm 10 is recessed to form a bearing for a vertically slidable bracket 21 having a slot 22 for the passage of a clamping bolt 23 whereby it is adjustably connected with-the arm 10; said bracket being provided with a laterally extending flange 2-1 the underside of which lies in a plane parallel to that of the upper edge of the arm 10. It will be further seen that the upper edge of the extension rule 17 is level with the upper edge of the arm 10, and likewise that the.
upper edges of the extension rules 17 of the main targets are level with the upper edges of the arms 10 of said targets. The jaws of the main targets are equipped with bushings 25 whereby they may be readily adjusted to fit upon shafts of different diameters.
F rom the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The main targets are clamped upon the shaft which is to be tested at a suitable distance apart with the upper edges of the arms 10 perfectly level, as will be indicated by the spirit levels 16. A line C is now stretched in a position parallel to the axis of the shaft, said position being readily .attained by reason of the presence of the rules '17 after which by applying the testing target any deviation from true of any portion of the shaft intermediate the main targets may be readily detected; the testing target being adjusted with the underside of the flange 24 resting upon the shaft while the upper edge of the arm 10 is brought to a level position as indicated by the spirit level 16; it being of course understood that the bracket 21 must have been previously adjusted until the distance between the planes of the underface of the flange 24 and the upper edge of the arm 10 is equal to the radius of the shaft to be tested.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a device of the character described, a target having clamping jaws, one of which is'provided with a laterally extending arm having a recess, an extension rule guided in said recess with its upper edge level with the upper edge of the arm, a keeper connecting the rule with the arm, a clamping screw extending through the keeper and through a a longitudinal slot in the arm, a casing upon the underside of the arm, and a spirit level in said casing.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with main targets having shaft engaging clamping jaws and provided each with an arm having a spirit level and an extension rule slidably connected with such arm, of a testing target including an arm having a spirit level, an extension rule slidably connected with said arm with its upper edge level with the upper edge of the arm, and a bracket slidably connected with the arm at right angles thereto and having a laterally extending flange, the underside of which lies in a plane parallel to the plane of the upper edge of the arm.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS N. BROUILLARD.
