Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM ABRAHAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a cap and the object of my invention is to so construct a cap that the front top portion of the same will be rigidly held in a raised position so that the cap will retain its proper shape.
A further object of my invention is to construct the top portion of the cap so that it will be water-proof; and a further object of my invention is to stiffen the fabric forming the intervening portion between the top and the band by vulcanizing the water-proof material with the outer fabric of the cap throughout said portion between the top of the cap and the band so that the said intervening portion will be stiff and will retain its shape in addition to the feature of making it water-proof.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1. is a side elevation of my improved cap; Fig. 2. is a longitudinal vertical section of the cap; and, Fig. 3. is a transverse section on line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents the band which is made stifi and rigid by the lining 2, over which the outer fabric of the band is placed. Below the band 1 is secured the peak 3 and on the inside is secured the usual sweat-band 1. Above the band 1 is secured the intervening portion 6, which extends between the top portion 7 and said band 1. The top 7 of the cap is retained in its proper shape by means of a wire 10, which is circular in form and over which the said top portion 7 is tightly drawn, so that the cap will present a perfectly flat surface on the top. A second wire 12 covered with cloth and also circular in form is placed adjacent to the wire 10 and both wires and the seam formed between the top 7 and the said intervening portion 6 are all secured together so as to form a rigid circular frame which holds the top of the cap in perfect shape. The front of the top portion of the cap is supported and held in a raised posi tion by a metal strip 15, which is secured to the Wire 10 at its upper end and secured at its lower end to the stiffening 2, forming part of the band 1, by a rivet 20 or any other suitable means. Said metal strip 15 is of sufiicient rigidity to hold the front of the cap in a raised position, as shown in the drawings.
The metal strip 15 is covered with cloth so that it may be more readily secured by sewing it to the stiffening 2 of the band 1 and also to make the metal strip present a neat appearance from the inside of the cap. The intervening portion 6, between the band 1 and the top 7, is formed by the outer fabric 16, the lining 17 and a sheet of rubber 18 interposed between said parts. The said intervening portion 6 is then pressed with a hot iron so that the fabric will be saturated with the rubber and become vulcanized which will make the fabric rigid and also water-proof. By making the fabric in this manner the said intervening portion 6 will retain its proper shape and the front of the cap will have a full rounded appearance between the top 7 and the band 1. The top 7 of the cap is provided with a lining 22 and a sheet of water-proof material 21 inserted between said lining 22 and the outer fabric forming the top 7 to make the top of the cap water-proof.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a cap, the combination of a band, a top portion, an intervening portion secured to said band and to said top portion, a circular wire frame to distend said top portion, a fiat strip of stifi material located in the front portion of said cap, said strip having one end thereof secured to said band and its other end secured to said wire frame whereby the front of said cap is held in raised position.
2. In a cap, the combination of a band, a top portion, an intervening portion of flexible fabric secured to said band and to said top portion, a circular wire frame to distend said top portion, a rigid flat metal strip secured to the said band and to the said wire frame adapted to rigidly hold the front of said top portion in a raised position and said flexible intervening portion between said band and said top portion adapted to allow the rear of said top portion to rest upon said band.
3. In a cap, the'combination of a band, a lining in said band to stiffen the same, a top portion, an intervening portion secured to said band and to said top portion, a waterproof lining in said top portion, a Wireframe to distend said top portion and a rigid metal strip located in the front portion of said cap, said metal strip having one end thereof secured to the said lining of said band and its other end secured to said wire frame whereby said top portion is rigidly held in a raised position at the front por- 10 tion of the cap.
