RAIN-PROOF HAT-COVERIN Gr.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1914.
Application led `September 8, 1911. Serial No. 648,370.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK COLLAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Newark, in the county of Hudson and State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rain- Proof Hat-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rain proof hat cover, and is designed to form an article of this nature which will conform to theshape of the hat, wherein all attaching and draw strings will be eliminated.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a hat-cover which will automatilclally retain itself rigidly in position on the With the above and other objects in view,
`this invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts,
hereinafter more fully described, illustrated` in the accompanying drawings, and particu larly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a hat having a cover, forming the subject-matter of the present invention, secured thereto; Fig. 2 is a central', longitudinal section, illustrating in detail the attaching means. l
The hat-cover, forming the Ysubject-inatter of the present invention, is formed of a solid piece of water-proof material, such as rubber.. This sheet of-material is formed or molded to conform with the crown of the hat, having a flounce about the lower side thereof adapted to cover the brim, said flounce having a thick, elastic, U-shaped portion about the edge thereof, adapted to engage the edge of the brim of the hat., This U-shaped portion is of smaller dimensions than the brim of the hat and conse-- quently will vform a rigid connection between said cover and said hat.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates the body of. the
cover formin the` subject-matter of the present invention, which is as shown tubular in formation and closed `at one end, said body being adapted to tit over and conform with the crown of a hat. Formed on the lower side of the walls of said tubular body portion is an outwardly-extending fiat annular brim-covering member 11 projecting peripherally therefrom, so constructed that the same will rest flush with the brim of the hat and wil1,.in no way, wrinkle. Formed about the edve of the brim-covering member 11 is a thicl, U-shaped, marginal band 12 that is shown thicker than the brim covering l1, said marginal band bein adapted to engage the edge of the brim o a hat.
In use, it will be apparent as shown 1n the drawings that the tubular body portion l0 will engage the crown of the hat and effectively cover the same while the flat annular brim portion 11 will cover the top of the brim and the U-shaped marginal band by engaging the edge of the hat brun and will hold the brim portion'll 1n position on the hat. Having thus fully described my inventlon, what I claim as new and desire to secure lby Letters Patent of the United States, is;-
A removable cover for hats, comprlsmg' a molded tubular body portion closed at one end, a flat annular brim portion proJecting peripherally from the other end of said body portion, and a marginal band U-shaped in cross section having one flange connected to the edge of said brim portion yso as to llie substantially tlush with the side thereof away from the body portion, said band being thicker than the brim. and body portion and adapted to vhold its said U-shape, whereby said band can be applied to the edge of a hat brim with the brim portion covering the top of said brim and the body portion covering the crown of thevhat.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature -in presence of two witnesses.
. PATRICK COLLAGAN.
