HAT.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, Jones Josnrns, citizen of Russian Poland, residing at 235 East 11th street, in the cit county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Soft Hats, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to hats of cloth or other material, particularly material that is so soft that the hat will not itself retain the desired shape, and of the type which it is usually desired to wear in the shape of the ordinary felt hat, having the top centrally depressed from front to back, with the top side creases slightly spaced apart, and the sides somewhat indented.
The object of my invention is the provision of means for retaining the shape of a soft hat of this sort. I
My invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. These drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts in all views, show a preferred embodiment of my invention. I
Figure l is a cross sectional view through a hat embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view looking upward into the hat shown inFig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 11 of Fig. 2 showing the tabs unfastened and the hat out of shape.
Referring to the drawings, the hat 1 may be of any suitable soft cloth material and of the ordinary shape, being crushable and adapted to be roughly handled for cleaning or packing or in use.
Inside the hat and at the two sides thereof, at opposite points, I provide tabs 2 and 8 which may be drawn together and fastened by means such as a snap fastener 4: so as to draw the sides 5 of the hat toward each other, forming and maintaining indentations 6 in the sides of the hat. The top portion 7 of the hat is centrally depressed from front to back, as at 8, providing upstanding creases 9 at each side, in the usual manner in whicha felt hat is worn, and the whereas, when the hat is Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1 9 21, 1921,
1920. Serial No. 391,792.
tabs are located with respect to the top portion 7, and are made of such length as to hold the creased portions 9 of the top at the desired distance apart while retaining the creases, and holding the sides of the hat indented in the desired fashion, the preferred position of attachment of the tabs being slightly above the depressed portion 8.
In a hat of this sort the preferred construction is with a crown portion 10 includingthe sides 5 to which the crown portion 7 is attached, preferably the seam 11 being made with the aid of a tape 12 under which the tabs 2, 3, may be fastened during the "construction of the hat, since this tape passes over the preferred point of attachment for the tabs in order to effect indentation of the sides at the proper point.
When the hat is worn, the snap fastener 4 will ordinarily be fastened, holding the tabs 2, 3, together, and holding the hat in shape; not in use, this may be unfastened, allowing the hat to resume its original manufactured form, and permitting of it being folded for packing, or subjected to cleaning operations and the like.
Having now described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a soft hat, means for retaining the shape with the top centrally depressed front to back, the top side creases suitably spaced, and the sides indented, comprising tabs secured to each side of the interior of the hat slightly above the depressed portion, and means to fasten together said tabs.
2. In a soft hat, side and top portions, a binding tape arranged at the joining of said portions, tabs secured under said tape on opposite sides, and means for fastening said tabs together when the hat is creased to hold the shape.
In a soft hat shaped to be worn with side indentations, means for retaining the shape comprising tabs attached to the interior of the sides at the central portions of the indentations, and means for detachably fastening said tabs together.
In testimony whereof I have name to this specification.
JULIUS J OSEPHS.
