ful Improvements in Book- Holders,
UNITED OFFICE.
EDWIN S. ANTISDALE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOOK-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. ANTIS- DALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use;T
0 which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in book-holders, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive article of this character adapted to hold a book in various positions to suit the reader when reclining or in a sitting posture.
A further object of my invention is to provide readily detachable parts in the holder in order that an exchange of the same may be made according to the requirements of the reader.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
\Vith these objects in View my invention consists in such a novel construction and arrangement of parts in a book-holder all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book-holder in its preferred form showing a book in a suitable position for a reader when in a sitting posture. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a book in a suitable position for a reader when in a reclining posture, the holder in this case to be placed on the readers breast. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that the part adapted to hold the book in an elevated position is detached. Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the book-holder arranged to hold a book in a higher position than that shown in Fig. 3 but lower than the position shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail elevation.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates a base which is preferably of wood and rectangular in form. A serles of pairs of perforations 2 are provided in the top surface ofthe base 1 adjacent the edges thereof, said perforations being adapted to receive the detachable parts of the book holder. The bail 3 is pivoted in the sides of the base 1 and forms a base extension when in the position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The book support 4 is substantially U- Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped and is formed preferably of wire, the same being readily inserted in any pair of perforations 2 and easily removed when not in use. The support 4 comprises two parallel portions 5 having bent portions 6 and 7 at the upper and lower extremitiesthereof respectively, the latter being provided to make the support of a sufiicient width to receive books of ordinary size. The wire book stop 8 is substantially U-shaped, but is provided with a bent portion 9 adapted to conform to the back of a book for holding the same in a central position on the book-holder. One leg of the stop 8 is adjustably secured in a transversely extending perforation in the base 1 as shown in the several figures.
In order that the bottom of the book 10 may be elevated to a higher position than that shown in Fig. 3 a wire member 11 is provided which is adjustably secured in the base 1 and may be tilted to any angle therein. This member comprises an arm 12 extending transversely through the base 1 and provided with a thumb screw 13. The arm 14 extends at right angles to the arm 12 and the outer end thereof is formed into a loop comprising two portions 15 and 16 disposed parallel with the arm 12, the portion 15 serving as a book support and the portion 16 as a book leaf holder as shown in Fig. 4.
The wire detachable member 17 which is provided to enable a person to read when in a reclining posture as well as when sitting comprises otf-set portions 18, substantially vertical and parallel portions 19, double wire horizontal and parallel portions 20, obliquely disposed loops. 21, and a U-shaped book supporting loop 22 substantially parallel with the loops 21, said loop having parallel members 23. A transversely disposed wire 24 tied to the members 23, as shown, is provided with downwardly and sli 'htly outwardly extending ends 25, said base 1, and the ends of the member 17 are inserted in the tubular portions 27.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved book holder, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be slight modifications of the same which would be comprehended within the scope of my invention.
I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a wood rectangular base having a series of perforations in the top surface thereof, a substantially U-shaped wire book support 'detachably secured in two of said perforations at one end of said base and a wire book support and leaf holder adjustably secured in the other end of said base, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2; In a device of the class described, a
base 1 having perforations 2, and a book support 17 comprising standards 18, loops 21, loop 22 and tie wire 24 having downwardly and outwardly extending ends 25, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a device of the class described, a base 1 having perforations 2, a book support 17 comprising standards 18, loops 21, loop 22 and tie wire 24 having downwardly and outwardly extending ends 25, and extensions for said book support comprising a tubular member 26 and projection 28, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
