To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM MERCER STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in seals and is a modification of a similar device described and illustrated in my copending application, Serial Number 476,251, filed, February 5th, 1909.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of one part of one of the preferred forms of my sealing device and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the other part of my sealing device and Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same. Fig. 5 is a cross section of the parts as assembled and Fig. 6 is a plan view looking down upon the same.
7 is a strip of suitable material terminating in the bowl or cup like member 8 and has the wings or projections 9 adapted to be folded over providing a guideway or channel wide enough to allow the passage of the end of the strip 7 which may be cut at the extremity forming the tongue 10. 11 is another bowl or cup like member adapted to be fastened face to face upon the bowl or cup like member 8 and which may be fastened thereto in any suitable manner. This cup is also provided with a short strip having the wings or projections 12 bent inwardly and providing an opening large enough to pass over the bent in projections 9.
18 and 14: are indentations or may be projections in the cups adapted to receive the end of the tongue 10 after the same has been introduced between the strip 7 and the inside of the projections 9.
In carrying out my invention the parts are preferably formed substantially as shown and after the two members have been pressed together the two bowls or cups are securely fastened around their periphery leaving an opening between the same in a line with the strip 7 so that by looping the strip 7 the end of the same may be introduced into the opening between the cups by pushing it through the channel formed by the projections 9. After the tongue has entered the chamber formed by the cups the same springs up- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly in vthe position shown in Fig. 5 and on attempting to withdraw it engages the recess 14 thereby preventing the withdrawal of the end of the strip after it has been introduced. If the tongue 10 is bent in the other direction it will engage the other recess 13 in the other cup or if it is not sufiiciently bent out of the plane of the strip 7, it will at any rate engage the inner edges of the projections 9 thereby preventing the withdrawal of the end as stated. It will readily be understood that with a construction of this kind it is practically impossible by introducing a knife or other instrument to disengage the tongue 10 from the recesses or projections with which it comes into engagement after having once been introduced into the chamber formed by the cups.
Of course it will also be understood that various other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a seal, a strip provided with a cup shaped member at one end and projections forming a channel through which the other end of said strip may be inserted, another cup shaped member, said cup shaped members secured together, a tongue in the end of said strip, opposite the end provided with said cup shaped member, said members constituting a housing and said members having indentations therein, either one of which is adapted to be engaged by said tongue.
2. In a seal, a strip provided with a cup shaped member at one end and projections forming a channel through which the other end of said strip may be inserted, another cup shaped member also having projections providing a channel adapted to receive said first mentioned projections, said cup shaped members secured together, a tongue in the end of said strip, opposite the end provided with said cup shaped member, said members constituting a housing and having in dentations therein, either one of which is adapted to be engaged by said tongue.
