Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '7, 1909.
Application filed July 24, 1908 Serial No. 445,139. Renewed August 5, 1909. Serial No. 511,448.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. EDGAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have' invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in seals and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof Figure 1 is a erspective View of a receptacle provided wlth the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the complete seal. Fig. 3 is a front view of a portion of the seal, and Fig. 4 is a section through the button.
The present embodiment of my invention comprises a strand A of wire or other suitable material having one of the ends thereof secured within a button B. The button B comprises a pair of disks 6, 6, each having its central portion dished as at 5 and provided with a central perforation 6 The end of the wire is arranged in a circular loop within the dished portion, the inner edge of the disks being recessed as at b to permit the passage of the wire. The edges of the disk are folded and pressed together and it will be evident that the circular loop on the wire will prevent its withdrawal from between the disks.
The seal is used as follows: The end of the wire is passed through the staple O, the hasp D having been properly positioned, and the wire is then passed through the registering perforations 12 A seal E of lead or other suitable plastic material is placed on the free end of the wire as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the addition of the lead seal preventing the withdrawal of the wire through the button.
My device is especially intended for sealing railway cars and the like, and the initials of the railroad or the firm using the seal may be embossed on the annular space 6 between the dished portion and the periphery of the disks. The leaden seal E may be impressed with the station number or other suitable designation showing where the seal is placed on the car or other article.
I claim:
A seal comprising a pair of concave disks arranged with their edges abutting and with their convex faces outward,.the edges being folded together and pressed, each of said disks having a central perforation and a strand of flexible material having one end secured between the disks, the free end of the strand being adapted to pass through the perforations of the disks, and to be engaged by a suitable means for preventing withdrawal thereof.
